Evidence for a merger of binary white dwarfs: the case of GD 362

Abstract

GD 362 is a massive white dwarf with a spectrum suggesting a H-rich atmosphere which also shows very high abundances of Ca, Mg, Fe and other metals. However, for pure H-atmospheres the diffusion timescales are so short that very extreme assumptions have to be made to account for the observed abundances of metals. The most favored hypothesis is that the metals are accreted from either a dusty disk or from an asteroid belt. Here we propose that the envelope of GD 362 is dominated by He, which at these effective temperatures is almost completely invisible in the spectrum. This assumption strongly alleviates the problem, since the diffusion timescales are much larger for He-dominated atmospheres. We also propose that the He-dominated atmosphere of GD 362 is likely to be the result of the merger of a binary white dwarf.

Perturbative approach for mass varying neutrinos coupled to the dark sector in the generalized Chaplygin gas scenario

We suggest a perturbative approach for generic choices for the universe equation of state and introduce a novel framework for studying mass varying neutrinos (MaVaN's) coupled to the dark sector. For concreteness, we examine the coupling between neutrinos and the underlying scalar field associated with the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), a unification model for dark energy and dark matter. It is shown that the application of a perturbative approach to MaVaN mechanisms translates into a constraint on the coefficient of a linear perturbation, which depends on the ratio between a neutrino energy dependent term and scalar field potential terms. We quantify the effects on the MaVaN sector by considering neutrino masses generated by the seesaw mechanism. After setting the GCG parameters in agreement with general cosmological constraints, we find that the squared speed of sound in the neutrino-scalar GCG fluid is naturally positive. In this scenario, the model stability depends on previously set up parameters associated with the equation of state of the universe. Our results suggest that the GCG is a particularly suitable candidate for constructing a stable MaVaN scenario.

Modell zur Entstehung eines Rings aus Dunkler Materie in der Milchstraßenebene

Both the distribution of hydrogen and the rotation curve of the Milky Way indicate the existence of a ring of Cold Dark Matter in the galactic plane with a radius of 14 kiloparsecs around the galactic centre. Using a semianalytical model, the formation of such a structure by the accretion of dwarf galaxies is simulated. The formation of the ring can be explained by the infall of a single dwarf galaxy, as well as by the infall of several dwarf galaxies under the condition that the eccentricity of the orbits is not larger than 0.2 and the inclination of the orbits is small. Also exclusion limits for the mass of dwarf galaxies, which contributed to the formation of the ring, are determined. ----- Die Verteilung von Wasserstoffgas sowie die Rotationskurve der Milchstraße deuten auf die Existenz eines Rings aus kalter Dunkler Materie innerhalb der Milchstraßenebene in einem Abstand von rund 14 Kiloparsec um das galaktische Zentrum. Es wird mit Hilfe eines semianalytischen Modells die Entstehung eines solchen Rings durch den Einfall von Zwerggalaxien in die Milchstraße simuliert. Die Entstehung des Rings kann sowohl durch einen Einzeleinfall als auch durch den Einfall mehrerer Zwerggalaxien erklärt werden, solange die numerische Exzentrizität der Orbits nicht 0.2 übersteigt und die Inklination der Orbits klein ist. Auch ein die Mindestmasse einer an der Ringentstehung beteiligten Zwerggalaxie beschreibender Zusammenhang ist ermittelt worden.

Solar system tests do not rule out 1/R gravity

We argue that Solar system tests do not rule out 1/R gravity at least due to the reason addressed in Phys. Rev. D 74 (2006) 121501 [astro-ph/0610483] (ref. [1]) and subsequent published papers. Ref. [1] has not only modified the Einstein-Hilbert action but also has changed the boundary conditions since they altered the equations of motion. In Einstein-Hilbert action equations are second order, so the fall off of the fields suffices to single out a unique solution. In 1/R gravity the equations are fourth order, so we should impose additional boundary conditions. Perhaps the boundary condition we must impose is that the abrupt change in the second derivative of the metric near the surface of the Sun remains intact by adding `1/R' corrections to the equations of motion. The solution of 1/R gravity with this boundary condition remains consistent with the solar system tests. Ref. [1] assumes that as soon as they perturbatively modified the equations then the Ricci scalar becomes smooth on the surface of the Sun. This assumption is simply wrong because the boundary conditions and equations of motions are two different entities.
