Lawvere completeness in Topology

Abstract

It is known since 1973 that Lawvere's notion of (Cauchy-)complete enriched category is meaningful for metric spaces: it captures exactly Cauchy-complete metric spaces. In this paper we introduce the corresponding notion of Lawvere completeness for $(\mathbb{T},\mathsf{V})$-categories and show that it has an interesting meaning for topological spaces and quasi-uniform spaces: for the former ones means weak sobriety while for the latter means Cauchy completeness. Further, we show that $\mathsf{V}$ has a canonical $(\mathbb{T},\mathsf{V})$-category structure which plays a key role: it is Lawvere-complete under reasonable conditions on the setting; permits us to define a Yoneda embedding in the realm of $(\mathbb{T},\mathsf{V})$-categories.

Flat and Ghost dimensions in tensor triangulated categories with a compact tilting generator

Let $\mathcal{T}$ be a tensor triangulated category with a compact tilting generator $M$ and abelian heart $\mathcal{H}_M = M^{\bot_{\neq0}}$. We define a triangulated flat dimension $\mathrm{flatdim}_{\mathcal{T}}X$ for $X\in\mathcal{T}$, and give criteria in terms of tensor vanishing and resolutions by the class of pure quotients of $\mathrm{Add}(M)$. We further introduce $M$-ghost length and $M$-ghost dimension, and show that the global dimension of $\mathcal{H}_M$ controls the $M$-ghost length of all objects in $\mathcal{T}$, and that the $M$-ghost dimension of $\mathcal{T}$ coincides with the weak global dimension of $\mathcal{H}_M$ and the supremum of $\mathrm{flatdim}_{\mathcal{T}}X+\mathrm{inf}X$ of bounded objects, and the relative triangulated dimension of $\mathcal{T}^c$ with respect to $\mathrm{add}(M)$. This extends the classical Hovey-Lockridge theorem, which is recovered for derived categories of rings.

Projective Geometries as $\mathbb{F}_1$-modules

We describe a fully faithful embedding of the category of axiomatic projective geometries into $\mathbb{F}_1$-modules, in the sense of Connes and Consani. In particular, the collineation group of a geometry is isomorphic to the group of automorphisms of its associated $\mathbb{F}_1$-module. Along the way, we describe a version of the classifying space construction for a broad generalization of Abelian groups which we call plasmas. Our construction subsumes Segal's existing delooping constructions for Abelian groups, commutative monoids and partial commutative monoids.

The Burnside ring of simple $\mathcal{C}$-sets

The Burnside ring of a finite category, introduced by Webb, generalizes the classical Burnside ring of a finite group. However, unlike the classical case, the Burnside ring of a finite category has finite rank if and only if the category is equivalent to a groupoid. In this article, we introduce a new invariant associated with a finite category $\mathcal{C}$, called the \emph{simple Burnside ring} of $\mathcal{C}$ and denoted by $B^S(\mathcal{C})$. This construction is obtained from simple $\mathcal{C}$-sets and generalizes the classical Burnside ring of a finite group. Moreover, the ring $B^S(\mathcal{C})$ always has finite rank. We develop the basic theory of simple $\mathcal{C}$-sets and study several structural properties of the ring $B^S(\mathcal{C})$. In particular, we determine all ring homomorphisms from $B^S(\mathcal{C})$ to $\mathbb{Z}$, describe its prime spectrum, and obtain a decomposition theorem expressing $B^S(\mathcal{C})$ as a product of simple Burnside rings of strongly connected subcategories.
