Gauge-equivariant Hilbert bimodules and crossed products by endomorphisms

Abstract

C*-endomorphisms arising from superselection structures with non-trivial centre define a 'rank' and a 'first Chern class'. Crossed products by such endomorphisms involve the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle having the above-mentioned rank and first Chern class, and can be used to construct a duality for abstract (nonsymmetric) tensor categories vs. group bundles acting on (nonsymmetric) Hilbert bimodules. Existence and unicity of the dual object (i.e., the 'gauge' group bundle) are not ensured: we give a description of this phenomenon in terms of a certain moduli space associated with the given endomorphism. The above-mentioned Hilbert bimodules are noncommutative analogues of gauge-equivariant vector bundles in the sense of Nistor-Troitsky.

Simplicity of action-based $C^{*}$-algebras from hyperbolic actions

We study the simplicity of $C^{*}$-algebras built from group actions. For a faithful isometric action of a group $G$ on a countable metric space $X$, we use the associated action representation on $\ell^2(X)$ to define the action-based $C^{*}$-algebra $C^{*}_{X}G$. We define generalized versions of the properties $P_{\mathrm{naive}}$ and $P_{\mathrm{analytic}}$ relative to this action and show that the naive form implies the analytic form. We also prove that $P_{\mathrm{analytic}}$ associated with a coefficient-separating action representation ensures the simplicity of the action-based $C^*$-algebra. As an application, for every connected orientable boundaryless infinite type surface containing a connected nondisplaceable finite type subsurface, we deduce that its mapping class group satisfies the properties $P_{\mathrm{naive}}^{\mathbb{X}}$ and $P_{\mathrm{analytic}}^{\mathbb{X}}$ for one fixed hyperbolic space $\mathbb X$.

Heisenberg-Weyl Representations and Morita equivalence for crossed products of Noncommutative solenoids

We study strong Morita equivalence for crossed products of noncommutative solenoids by cyclic groups. Using their description as twisted group $\mathrm C^*$-algebras, we construct automorphisms induced by the natural linear action of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z[1/p])$ on $\mathbb Z[1/p]^2$, for every integer $p>1$. For odd primes, we use the Heisenberg--Weyl representation to construct compatible cyclic group actions on the equivalence bimodules relating solenoids with reciprocal parameters. This yields strong Morita equivalences between the corresponding crossed products by $\mathbb Z$ and, for finite-order matrices, by finite cyclic groups. The corresponding equivalence for flip crossed products for the action of $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$ holds for every prime, including $2$. For prime $p$, we give representatives for the nontrivial finite subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z[1/p])$ and explicit arithmetic criteria for conjugacy among these representatives.

A note on purely infinite extensions

We study a strong pure infiniteness property for extensions, and give a classification result for extensions which contains many (and possibly all) previous cases, under standard and mild assumptions. We also prove a Voiculescu-type theorem decomposition theorem for certain C*-subalgebras of a corona algebra, for which the inclusion map has this strong pure infiniteness property.
