Boutroux curves with external field: equilibrium measures without a minimization problem

Abstract

The nonlinear steepest descent method for rank-two systems relies on the notion of g-function. The applicability of the method ranges from orthogonal polynomials (and generalizations) to Painleve transcendents, and integrable wave equations (KdV, NonLinear Schroedinger, etc.). For the case of asymptotics of generalized orthogonal polynomials with respect to varying complex weights we can recast the requirements for the Cauchy-transform of the equilibrium measure into a problem of algebraic geometry and harmonic analysis and completely solve the existence and uniqueness issue without relying on the minimization of a functional. This addresses and solves also the issue of the ``free boundary problem'', determining implicitly the curves where the zeroes of the orthogonal polynomials accumulate in the limit of large degrees and the support of the measure. The relevance to the quasi--linear Stokes phenomenon for Painleve equations is indicated. A numerical algorithm to find these curves in some cases is also explained. The gauge action on (semi-)discrete Lax representations, its invariants, and Lax-Miura type constructions

We introduce and study explicit invariants with respect to the action of gauge transformations on the set of semi-discrete (differential-difference) matrix Lax representations (MLRs) for a given (1+1)-dimensional evolutionary differential-difference equation with any number of components. Using these invariants, we obtain the following general results: - Sufficient conditions for nonremovability of parameters in semi-discrete MLRs. (Nonremovability by means of gauge transformations.) - Necessary conditions for two semi-discrete MLRs to be gauge equivalent. Effective use of these results is demonstrated. We present the general theory and apply it to MLRs for equations of Volterra-Yamilov, Cherdantsev-Yamilov, Toda types and Miura-type modifications. Also, we present a comparison with results of S.Yu. Sakovich and M. Marvan on gauge invariants for (continuous) zero-curvature representations of partial differential equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate procedures for constructing Miura-type transformations (MTs) for discrete (partial difference) equations (on the two-dimensional integer lattice) by means of gauge simplifications of discrete matrix Lax pairs (DLPs) and reductions of auxiliary systems associated with DLPs. This allows us to construct new MTs for (non-evolutionary) 4-point and 6-point discrete equations from [D. Levi, R.I. Yamilov, J. Phys. A 2009], [S. Konstantinou-Rizos, A.V. Mikhailov, P. The \textsc{ABC}-equation revisited: missed integrable cases. Part I: classification and (quasi) integrable structures

We consider the \textsc{ABC}-equation $Au_xu_{yt} + Bu_yu_{xt} + Cu_tu_{xy} = 0$, $A$, $B$, $C\in\mathbb{R}$, which was proved to be integrable in the case $A + B + C = 0$ (the Veronese web equation). Our study reveals ten more cases that admit integrable structures that, to the best of our knowledge, where not known before. The techniques is based essentially on the theory of the tangent and cotangent coverings.

A vectorial Darboux transformation for integrable matrix versions of the Fokas-Lenells equation

Using bidifferential calculus, we derive a vectorial binary Darboux transformation for an integrable matrix version of the first negative flow of the Kaup-Newell hierarchy. A reduction from the latter system to an integrable matrix version of the Fokas-Lenells equation is then shown to inherit a corresponding vectorial Darboux transformation. Matrix soliton solutions are derived from the trivial seed solution. Furthermore, the Darboux transformation is exploited to determine in a systematic way exact solutions of the two-component vector Fokas-Lenells equation on a plane wave background. This comprises breathers, dark solitons, rogue waves and "beating solitons".
