Injectivity and Projectivity in Analysis and Topology

Abstract

We give new proofs for many injectivity results in analysis that make more careful use of the duality between unital abelian C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff spaces. We then extend many of these results to incorporate group actions. Our approach uses only elementary topological constructions and eliminates the need for results from the theory of Boolean algebras and AW*-algebras that were used in earlier proofs.

$\mathrm{C}^*$-selflessness of groups of homeomorphisms

We prove that $\mathrm{C}^*$-simple groups which admit a faithful extreme boundary are $\mathrm{C}^*$-selfless. More precisely, we establish complete selflessness of the canonical inclusion of the reduced group $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra into the reduced crossed product. In particular, the Higman--Thompson groups and the Brin--Thompson groups are $\mathrm{C}^*$-selfless.

Aperiodic automorphisms of the Razak--Jacelon algebra

We completely classify aperiodic automorphisms of the Razak--Jacelon algebra $\mathcal{W}$ up to outer conjugacy. As a technical ingredient, based on the works of Connes, Herman--Ocneanu, Kishimoto, and Sato, we introduce a notion of weak stability for automorphisms of simple separable monotracial C$^*$-algebras. We also consider automorphisms of UHF algebras of infinite type and the Jiang--Su algebra.

The $2$-co-lacunary subsequence principle for arbitrary noncommutative $L_1$-spaces

For every von Neumann algebra \(\M\), we prove that each bounded sequence in the Haagerup space \(L_1(\M)=\M_*\) admits either a norm-convergent subsequence or a \(2\)-co-lacunary subsequence. This answers an open problem of Parcet and Randrianantoanina \cite[Remark~3.11]{ParcetRandrianantoanina2006} and removes both hyperfiniteness and semifiniteness.
