Dilatation structures with the Radon-Nikodym property

Abstract

In this paper I explain what is a pair of dilatation structures, one looking down to another. Such a pair of dilatation structures leads to the intrinsic definition of a distribution as a field of topological filters. To any pair of dilatation structures there is an associated notion of differentiability which generalizes the Pansu differentiability. This allows the introduction of the Radon-Nikodym property for dilatation structures, which is the straightforward generalization of the Radon-Nikodym property for Banach spaces. After an introducting section about length metric spaces and metric derivatives, is proved that for a dilatation structure with the Radon-Nikodym property the length of absolutely continuous curves expresses as an integral of the norms of the tangents to the curve, as in Riemannian geometry. Further it is shown that Radon-Nikodym property transfers from any "upper" dilatation structure looking down to a "lower" dilatation structure, theorem \ref{ttransfer}. Im my opinion this result explains intrinsically the fact that absolutely continuous curves in regular sub-Riemannian manifolds are derivable almost everywhere, as proved by Margulis-Mostow, Pansu (for Carnot groups) or Vodopyanov.

Limits of mapping packages and tangents of Sobolev maps

We show the existence of ultralimits of sequences of Hajlasz-Sobolev mappings $f_i:X_i\to Y_i$ when $X_i$ converges to a limit space in the pointed measured Gromov (pmG) sense, partially extending recent results in [T. Ikonen and S. Wenger, (2026), arXiv:2603.05246]. We moreover demonstrate that the mappings pmG-converge to the ultralimit in a suitable sense, and obtain Arzela-Ascoli theorems in the context of pmG-convergence. As an application, we establish a version of Preiss's phenomenon for Hajlasz-Sobolev maps $f:(X,μ)\to V$ into arbitrary Banach spaces. Besides extending it to maps into infinite dimensional targets, our result generalizes existing versions of Preiss's phenomenon [G. C. David, Geom. Funct. Anal., 25 (2015)], [N. Gigli, A. Mondino, and T. Rajala, J. Reine Angew. Math., 705 (2015)] by establishing it for pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff tangents without a doubling assumption.

The Canonical Induced Metric for Topological Branched Coverings and Geometric Applications

Given a continuous map $f:X\to Y$ from a continuum-connected space into a metric space, we introduce an associated canonical pullback metric $d_f$ on $X$ by combining the target diameter structure with the Mazurkiewicz construction as \[ d_f(x,x')=\inf\{\operatorname{diam}_Y f(E): E\subset X\text{ is a continuum containing }x,x'\}. \] Our main result shows that if $f:(X,ρ)\to Y$ is $L$-BDD, then $d_f$ is quantitatively equivalent to the Mazurkiewicz metric $ρ_M$, $(d_f)_M=d_f$, every continuum satisfies $\operatorname{diam}_{d_f}E=\operatorname{diam}_Y f(E)$ and $f:(X,d_f)\to Y$ is $1$-BDD and hence $1$-BLD. For bounded-turning spaces, this identifies a canonical bi-Lipschitz metric realization in the sense that every finite-to-one topological branched covering onto a locally length metric manifold admits such a compatible induced metric without any a priori BDD hypothesis. There are two main geometric applications of the induced pullback metric. Firstly, we prove an index-free quantitative porosity theorem for branch sets and their images at points of controlled linear or inverse linear dilatation, extending the well-known Bonk-Heinonen theorem and Sarvas theorem for branch set of Euclidean quasiregular mappings to a large class of metric spaces. Secondly, we prove that every finite-to-one BDD branched covering over a doubling bounded-turning target space admits a quantitative bi-Lipschitz embedding into the target times a finite-dimensional Euclidean space. As direct corollaries, we solve several well-known open problems asked by Heinonen, Rickman and Semmes.

Strict concavity properties of cross covariograms

It is well-known that the cross covariogram of two convex bodies in n dimensions is 1/n-concave on its support. This paper provides conditions for strict 1/n-concavity in dimension n>1, and an analysis of how it can fail. Among the implications are that (i.) the cross covariogram of strictly convex bodies is strictly 1/n-concave, unless one body contains a translate of the other in its interior, and (ii.) the cross covariogram of an arbitrary convex body with its reflection through the origin is strictly log-concave.
