Dilatation structures in sub-riemannian geometry

Abstract

Based on the notion of dilatation structure arXiv:math/0608536, we give an intrinsic treatment to sub-riemannian geometry, started in the paper arXiv:0706.3644 . Here we prove that regular sub-riemannian manifolds admit dilatation structures. From the existence of normal frames proved by Bellaiche we deduce the rest of the properties of regular sub-riemannian manifolds by using the formalism of dilatation structures.

On Santaló's Problem

This paper investigates an isoperimetric-type problem posed by L. A. Santaló, concerning convex surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space that minimize total mean curvature among all convex surfaces with fixed surface area. This problem asks for a characterization of the minimizers and for the optimal form of a Minkowski-type inequality in hyperbolic 3-space. In this work, we propose a conjectural description of the minimizers under certain regularity assumptions. We also construct a new family of convex surfaces as as potential minimizer candidates and establish a property of the singular points of any minimizer.

Ambient and Poincaré metrics for CR $3$-manifolds associated with the self-dual Einstein ACH metric

We construct new ambient and Poincaré metrics for the Fefferman conformal manifold over $3$-dimensional CR manifolds, starting from the associated self-dual Einstein ACH metric. Unlike the classical ambient and Poincaré metrics arising from approximate solutions to the complex Monge-Ampère equation, these metrics satisfy Einstein-Maxwell-type equations to infinite order rather than the Ricci-flat or Einstein equations. Since these metrics are determined to infinite order without ambiguity, they enable us to construct CR invariant differential operators and local CR invariants involving arbitrarily high order derivatives of the Tanaka-Webster curvature and torsion. As an application, we obtain the ambient metric construction of the CR GJMS (Gover-Graham) operators of all orders in dimension $3$.

Compactness and Noncompactness for the Positive Yamabe--Escobar Problem with Minimal Boundary

We study the Yamabe--Escobar equation prescribing positive constant scalar curvature and minimal boundary. The compactness conjecture asks whether being conformally equivalent to the round hemisphere is the only obstruction for its set of positive solutions to be compact. In this paper we show that this is true for dimensions $3\leq n\leq 14$. We show that this dimensional threshold $n_*=14$ is sharp by constructing in $n\geq 15$ nonumbilic and non-locally-conformally-flat examples of metrics in the hemisphere for which a noncompact sequence of solutions exists. We do the same for the special classes of locally conformally flat metrics, $n_*^{LCF}=18$, and the metrics with umbilic boundary, $n_*^{umb} =20$. In all three settings we also prove that the Weyl--umbilicity vanishing conjecture holds for $4\leq n\leq n_*$ and construct counterexamples in $n>n_*$ by perturbing the noncompactness examples. To the best of the author's knowledge, these are the first locally conformally flat noncompactness constructions for the positive-scalar-curvature, minimal-boundary case of the Yamabe--Escobar equation, outside the conformal class of the round hemisphere.
