Topological complexity of motion planning and Massey products

Abstract

We employ Massey products to find sharper lower bounds for the Schwarz genus of a fibration than those previously known. In particular we give examples of non-formal spaces $X$ for which the topological complexity $\TC(X)$ (defined to be the genus of the free path fibration on $X$) is greater than the zero-divisors cup-length plus one.

Homotopy Non-Invariance of the String Cobracket

We prove that the integral string cobracket is not invariant under homotopy equivalences. Using Naef's computation arXiv:2106.11307 of the Goresky--Hingston coproduct and the Leray--Serre spectral sequence for the Borel construction, we compute the degree-two string cobracket for the three-dimensional lens spaces $L(9;1)$ and $L(9;4)$. The rank profiles of the cobracket on their nontrivial free-loop components differ, although the two lens spaces are homotopy equivalent. We also discuss the defect of naturality in relation to the Dennis trace of Whitehead torsion.

Semi-topological Galois cohomology and Weierstrass realizability

Semi-topological Galois theory associates a canonical finite splitting covering to a monic Weierstrass polynomial. The inverse limit of the corresponding deck groups defines the absolute semi-topological Galois group, $\PiST(X,x)$. This paper develops a cohomology theory for $\PiST(X,x)$ with discrete torsion coefficients, establishing its fundamental properties and canonical comparison maps to singular cohomology. A Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence is used to yield an obstruction theory for semi-topological embedding problems. We prove several structural and vanishing results, including ST-fullness for free fundamental groups and triviality for finite fundamental groups. As applications, we provide a criterion for lifting finite projective monodromy to linear monodromy, formulate the $π_1$-detectable Weierstrass realizability conjecture for divisor classes and show that this conjecture is true for abelian varieties, smooth complex projective curves and ruled surfaces over positive-genus curves.

The real and complex Betti realizations of motivic multiplicative Thom spectra

Real Betti realization is a symmetric monoidal functor from the category of motivic spectra over $\mathbb{R}$ to that of topological spectra, extending the functor that associates to a scheme over $\mathbb{R}$ the space of its real points. In this article, we show that the motivic Thom spectrum functor and the topological one correspond to each other, as symmetric monoidal functors of infinity-categories, under real (and complex) realization. More precisely, we compare the constructions of Bachmann-Hoyois (in the motivic setting) and Ando-Blumberg-Gepner (in the topological setting). In particular, we obtain equivalences of $\mathcal{E}_\infty$-rings between the real realizations of the variants $\mathsf{MGL}$, $\mathsf{MSL}$, and $\mathsf{MSp}$ of algebraic cobordism, and the variants $\mathsf{MO}$, $\mathsf{MSO}$, and $\mathsf{MU}$ of topological cobordism, respectively, and an analogous result for complex realization.
