Recent results on (anti)nucleus and (anti)hyperon production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN SPS energies

Abstract

The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $Ξ^-$ and $\barΞ^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to compare with the results from the AGS and the RHIC for central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions. The dependence of the yield ratios and the inverse slope parameter of the $m_t$ spectra on the collision energy and centrality, and the mass number of the produced nuclei $^3He$, $t$, $d$ and $\bar{d}$ are discussed within coalescence and statistical approaches. Analysis of the total multiplicity exhibits remarkable agreement between the measured yield for $^3He$ and those predicted by the statistical hadronization model. In addition, new results on $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ as well as $Ξ^-$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV and central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions are presented. The system size dependence of the yields of these hyperons was analysed to determine the evolution of strangeness enhancement relative to elementary p+p collisions.

Letter of Intent for Alpha Knockout from Nuclei in Hard Exclusive Processes with ALERT

We propose to measure hard exclusive $α$-knockout reactions from the light $α$-conjugate nuclei $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne using electron scattering. Three reaction channels will be measured for the first time on the same target set: (i) the quasi-elastic knockout $(e, e' α)$ knockout, which establishes a baseline against $α$-clustering model calculations and tests final-state-interaction (FSI) models; (ii) coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on a bound $α$, which provides a quark-level probe of the bound system through the beam-spin asymmetry; and (iii) coherent vector-meson production ($ϕ$ and J/{$ψ$}) on a bound $α$, which probes the gluon distribution of the bound cluster through two-gluon exchange. The central observables are ratios of cross sections and beam-spin asymmetries between the bound $α$ in $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$ Ne and the free $^4$He ground state. Together these measurements directly address the question of the role of QCD in the structure of light nuclei : do the quark and gluon distributions of an $α$ embedded in a heavier nucleus differ from those of a free 4He, and do those modifications track the increasing $α$-clustering strength along the $α$-conjugate chain? The measurement will use the 12 GeV CEBAF accelerator in Hall B with the CLAS12 spectrometer instrumented with the ALERT low-energy recoil detector and high-pressure gas straw targets. ALERT, which replaced the CLAS12 silicon vertex tracker, was successfully commissioned and operated during Run Group L (RG-L) from April through August 2025. It uniquely provides identification of low-momentum recoiling light ions (p, d, t, $^3$He, and $^4$He) close to the beamline at the high luminosities required by these exclusive channels.

Experimental review on global polarization and spin alignment in heavy-ion collisions

Polarization phenomena in heavy-ion collisions have attracted considerable interest since the first experimental observation of global spin polarization. Over the past few years, particle polarization has emerged as a rapidly growing field, with new measurements that have stimulated intense theoretical efforts to understand the puzzling experimental results. In these proceedings, we review recent experimental progress on hyperon global polarization, local polarization along the beam direction, and vector-meson spin alignment in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and newly emerging measurements of spin-spin correlations. These measurements provide new insights into the vortical structure of the quark-gluon plasma and the spin dynamics during the system evolution.

Gallium Anomaly and Solar Neutrinos

The Gallium Anomaly is the disagreement between the measured capture rate of neutrinos by $^{71}$Ga and the rate theoretically expected from the electron capture decay of $^{71}$Ge. The experimental measurements were performed with intense artificial sources. In the present work we consider the sun as a neutrino source that can be calibrated via the fundamental, standard-model neutrino-electron elastic scattering reaction in terrestrial detectors. The result is found to be not anomalous, with good agreement between the measured value of $66.1\pm3.1$ SNU from SAGE and Gallex/GNO, and the total measured source strengths of solar sources, $67.5^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ SNU. It may be concluded that neither the $^{71}$Ga charged-current cross section nor gallium experiment extraction and counting efficiencies account for the Gallium Anomaly.
