Local cohomology based on a nonclosed support defined by a pair of ideals

Abstract

We introduce an idea for generalization of a local cohomology module, which we call a local cohomology module with respect to a pair of ideals (I,J), and study their various properties. Some vanishing and nonvanishing theorems are given for this generalized version of local cohomology. We also discuss its connection with the ordinary local cohomology.

Multigraded Local Cohomology Categories: Homological Structure and Canonical Sources

Let $S=\kk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ with its standard $\mathbb N^n$-grading. For $0\le i<n$, we identify the finite-box local-cohomology category $\mathcal H_i(\mathbf t)$ with the representation category of the upper support poset $U_{n-i}(\mathbf t)$. The local-cohomology functor admits an exact functorial section selecting sources of minimal projective dimension and maximal depth in every non-top degree, but for $n\ge2$ and $\mathbf t\ge\mathbf1$ no fully faithful section exists for $i=1$ or $i=n-1$, even without exactness. We construct explicit sources in $\mathcal A^+_{\mathbf t}$ for all indecomposable projective objects. The source attached to $\mathbf a$ is a prescribed syzygy of a Brun--Fløystad interval module; it is a brick of projective dimension $n-i$ and is Cohen--Macaulay exactly on the bottom support-rank stratum $\ell(\mathbf a)=n-i$. We relate these sources in adjacent degrees to the support-rank torsion filtration, obtaining a syzygy tower, and identify their additive category with the projective part of $\mathcal H_i(\mathbf t)$. As applications, we determine attached primes from projective covers and compute the Bass numbers of projective and injective objects. We also pose questions about extensions to complete-intersection and general monomial supports.

A complex associated to a family of ideals and applications to subspace arrangements

We reprove and generalize a result of Derksen describing the Hilbert polynomial of the vanishing ideal of a transversal subspace arrangement in projective space. When the subspaces have all codimension 2, we describe explicitly the local cohomology modules of the corresponding defining ideal. This is achieved via a complex naturally associated to the subspace arrangement, whose basic properties are also investigated.

Counterexamples to Minkowski-type inequalities and the Rees converse for modules via mixed Buchsbaum-Rim Multiplicities

In this paper, we explore mixed Buchsbaum--Rim multiplicities of finite-colength submodules of free modules over Noetherian local rings. We extend the Hilbert-polynomial construction to submodules in arbitrary homogeneous degrees and prove a product formula for the resulting coefficients. We then examine module analogues of Teissier's coefficient inequalities and the Minkowski inequality. Explicit examples show that the coefficientwise power inequalities, log-convexity, and the product-root inequality can all fail; several failures occur over regular local rings. We also prove that equality of integral closures forces equality of all mixed Buchsbaum--Rim multiplicities, while a one-dimensional example shows that the converse fails for arbitrary modules. A converse is recovered when the module closures are the integral closures of modules of the form $IF$ for $\mathfrak m$-primary ideals $I$. The general converse problem in dimension at least two is stated at the end.
