HMC algorithm for two-flavour lattice QCD: Schwarz-preconditioning with a one-dimensional domain decomposition

Abstract

We study a variant of the Schwarz-preconditioned HMC algorithm. In contrast to the original proposal of Lüscher, we apply the domain decomposition in one lattice direction only. This is sufficient to reduce the condition number of the fermion matrix restricted to the domains compared with the full fermion matrix. For the same linear extension of the domain, less links reside on the boundaries of the domains. Therefore it becomes e.g. practical to iterate the decomposition. We perform numerical tests for two degenerate flavours of Wilson fermions. The standard Wilson gauge action at $β=5.6$ is used. The performance of our implementation is compared with other recent studies using various types of preconditioning.

Data Free Training of Diffusion Models for Lattice Field Theories

Sampling equilibrium field configurations remains a major computational bottleneck in lattice field theory, motivating the development of generative samplers that can produce independent configurations. Diffusion models are promising for this purpose, but their standard denoising score matching objective requires samples from the target distribution, seemingly reintroducing the original sampling problem. Here, we show that diffusion models can instead be trained from their own generated samples using the target score identity, provided access to the unnormalized probability density. Importance-weighted formulations of this identity yield a consistent target throughout training, while unweighted variants define a self-consistent fixed-point training scheme. We benchmark the different approaches in two-dimensional \(ϕ^4\) theory and identify effective choices that enable efficient training and sampling across the symmetric, critical, and broken phases. Ultimately, our data-free training approach achieves comparable performance to training on HMC reference data.

The Arf-Brown-Kervaire invariant on a lattice

We propose a lattice formulation of the Arf-Brown-Kervaire (ABK) invariant which takes values in $\mathbb{Z}_8$. Compared to the standard $\mathbb{Z}$-valued index, the ABK invariant is more involved in that it arises in Majorana fermion partition functions with reflection symmetry on two-dimensional non-orientable manifolds, and its definition contains an infinite sum over Dirac eigenvalues that requires proper regularization. We employ the massive Wilson Dirac operator, with and without domain-walls, on standard two-dimensional square lattices, and use its Pfaffian for the definition. Twisted boundary conditions and cross-caps, which reverse the orientation, are introduced to realize nontrivial topologies equipped with nontrivial $\mathrm{Pin}^{-}$ structures of Majorana fermions. We verify numerically (and partly analytically) that our formulation on a torus, Klein bottle, real projective plane (as well as its triple connected sum), and two types of Möbius strip reproduces the known values in continuum theory.

Digital Quantum Simulation of Nonequilibrium Dynamics in the Schwinger Model under a Strong External Electric Field

We use the (1+1)-dimensional Schwinger model to investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of a finite lattice system under a constant external electric field. The lattice Hamiltonian is constructed under open boundary conditions. The vacuum state is prepared using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). Scans over the external field strength show the flip of the vacuum state at several field strengths. The critical field strengths agree with theoretical predictions. We further investigate the real-time evolution of the zero-field vacuum under an external electric field using a second-order Trotter-Suzuki decomposition. By comparison with exact diagonalization (ED), we verify that the quantum-simulation protocol reproduces the main features of field-induced boundary charge separation, decay of the vacuum-state fidelity, and quasiperiodic energy redistribution between the electric-field energy term and the fermionic sector. Our results indicate that combining VQE-based state preparation with digital real-time evolution provides a useful approach for studying nonequilibrium dynamics in strong-field lattice gauge theories.
