Non-linear structure formation and the acoustic scale

Abstract

We present high signal-to-noise measurements of the acoustic scale in the presence of nonlinear growth and redshift distortions using 320(Gpc/h)^3 of cosmological PM simulations. Using simple fitting methods, we obtain robust measurements of the acoustic scale with scatter close to that predicted by the Fisher matrix. We detect and quantify the shift in the acoustic scale by analyzing the power spectrum: we detect at greater than 5 sigma a decrease in the acoustic scale in the real-space matter power spectrum of 0.2% at z=1.5, growing to 0.45% at z=0.3. In redshift space, the shifts are about 25% larger: we detect a decrease of 0.25% of at z=1.5 and 0.54% at z=0.3. Despite the nonzero amounts, these shifts are highly predictable numerically, and hence removable within the standard ruler analysis of clustering data. Moreover, we show that a simple density-field reconstruction method substantially reduces the scatter and nonlinear shifts of the acoustic scale measurements: the shifts are reduced to less than 0.1% at z=0.3-1.5, even in the presence of non-negligible shot noise. Finally, we show that the ratio of the cosmological distance to the sound horizon that would be inferred from these fits is robust to variations in the parameterization of the fitting method and reasonable differences in the template cosmology.

In Flight Determination of the Plate Scale of the EIT

Using simultaneous observations of the MDI and EIT instruments on board the SoHO spacecraft, we determined in flight the plate scale of the EIT. We found a value of 2.629+-0.001 arc seconds per pixel, in fair agreement with the 2.627+-0.001 arc seconds per pixel value deduced from recent laboratory measurements of the focal length, and much higher by 7 sigma than the 2.622 arc seconds per pixel value of the pre-flight calibrations. The plate scale is found to be constant across the field of view, confirming the negligible distortion level predicted by the theoretical models of the EIT. Furthermore, the 2 sigma difference between our results and the latest laboratory measurements, although statistically small, may confirm a recent work suggesting that the solar photospheric radius may be 0.5 Mm lower than the classically adopted value of 695.99 Mm.

Revised dynamics or dark matter in galactic and extra galactic scales?

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of velocity curves of spirals, of velocity dispersions in clusters of galaxies and in interpreting the Tully-Fisher or Faber-Jackson relations in galaxies or systems of galaxies. The revised gravitation admits of superposition principle but only approximately in systems whose components are widely separated. The revised dynamics admits of the equivalence principle in that, the effective force acting on a test particle is derived from a potential, and could be eliminated in a freely falling frame of reference

Primordial Non-Gaussianity in Multi-Scalar Inflation

We give a concise formula for the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation generated on super-horizon scales in multi-scalar inflation model without assuming slow-roll conditions. This is an extension of our previous work. Using this formula, we study the generation of non-Gaussianity for the double inflation models in which the slow-roll conditions are temporarily violated after horizon exit, and we show that the non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$ for such models is suppressed by the slow-roll parameters evaluated at the time of horizon exit.
