The GALFA-HI Survey: Techniques

Abstract

We explain the entire process by which we conduct the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey. The survey is a high resolution (3.4'), large area (13000 deg^2), large Galactic velocity range (-750 to +750 km/s), high spectral resolution (0.18 km/s) survey of the Galaxy in the 21 cm line hyperfine transition of hydrogen conducted at Arecibo Observatory. We touch on some of the new Galactic science being conducted using the GALFA-HI survey, ranging from High-Velocity Clouds to HI narrow-line self-absorption. We explain the many technical challenges that confront such a survey, including baseline ripple, gain variation and asymmetrical beam shapes. To correct for these systematic effects we use various newly developed methods, which we describe in detail. We also explain the data reduction process step by step, starting with the raw time-ordered data and ending with fully calibrated maps. The effects of each step of the data reduction on the final data product is shown sequentially. We conclude with future directions for the ongoing survey.

The Theory of Bodily Tides. The Models and the Physics

Description of tides is based on the form of dependence of the geometric lag on the tidal frequency. Some authors assume the lag angle to be constant, others set it to be linear in the frequency. The actual dependence of the lag on the frequency is complicated and is determined by the planet's rheology. A particular form of this dependence will fix the form of the frequency dependence of the tidal quality factor Q. Since at present we know the frequency-dependence of the quality factor, we can reverse our line of reasoning and obtain the appropriate frequency-dependence of the lag. Employment of a realistic frequency-dependence for Q renders considerable changes in timescales defined by tidal dynamics.

Galaxy Formation With Dark Matter and Dark Energy

Eliptical and bulge galaxies share a tight correlation of velocity distribution to both luminosity and black hole mass. There are similar orbital speeds for all galaxies of a given luminosity including dark matter (DM) at large radii. The halo surface density of DM is constant for almost all types of galaxies and ranges 14 mag. down to dwarf spherical galaxies. There are supermassive black holes or giant, pure disk galaxies at high redshift inexplicable with hierarchical clustering or collapse dynamics. These and a myriad of other galaxy formation problems are explainable by an initial shell which caused the Planck cosmic microwave background radiation. A reduction in the energy-density of primordial galactic black holes is necessary to explain dark energy.
