Microscopic description of spin distributions in multinucleon tranfer reactions

Abstract

Background: The generation of spin distributions in fission fragments has attracted substantial interest in recent years and its mechanism is becoming clear alongside the refined description with microscopic theories. In contrast, the microscopic origin of spin distributions in reaction products remain largely unexplored. Methods: Three-dimensional TDHF calculations are performed for multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{40}\text{Ca} + {}^{124}\text{Sn}$ reaction at $E_{\text{c.m.}} \simeq 128.54\,\text{MeV}$ using the Skyrme SLy5 energy density functional. To obtain spin distributions in each transfer channel, the particle-number projection (PNP) and the angular-momentum projection (AMP) are simultaneously achieved for a reaction product. Results: By performing PNP+AMP for TDHF wave functions after collisions, spin-dependent transfer cross sections are calculated for projectile-like fragments (PLFs). From the results, we find that abundant spin distributions can be obtained from the TDHF wave functions. For one-nucleon addition and removal channels, the calculated spin values agree well with those of single-particle states in the $pf$- and $sd$-shell, respectively. Moreover, for a-few-nucleon transfer channels, we show that the obtained spin distributions can be well explained by combinations of total angular momenta of those single-particle states. Furthermore, as the number of transferred nucleons increases, we find that the calculated spin distributions exhibit a smooth singly-peaked shape with a long tail as a function of $J$, which resembles that of empirical spin distributions for thermally equilibrated fragments. An exploratory calculation for induced fission of $^{240}$Pu is also carried out, obtaining similar results as in multinucleon transfer reactions. (shorted due to the arXiv's word limit)

Radiative corrections to the parity-violating spin asymmetry

The parity-violating spin asymmetry Apv for elastic electron scattering from spin-zero nuclei, together with its QED corrections, is evaluated non-perturbatively within the phase-shift analysis. Dispersion corrections, taking into account low-lying transient nuclear excitations, are estimated with the help of the lowest-order $γZ$ box diagrams. Collision energies between 5 $-$ 500 MeV are considered, and results are provided for the $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb target nuclei. In addition, we have evaluated Apv at GeV energies and small scattering angles -- relevant for the Pb Radius Experiment (PREx) -- revealing that the low-lying nuclear excited states give no measurable dispersive contribution. However, they are important at lower energies and backward angles.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations in the nuclear shell model by the complex Langevin method

The nuclear shell model is known to describe the properties of various nuclei extremely well. However, the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations cannot be applied to it with general interactions due to the sign problem. The model has therefore been investigated primarily by variational methods, where the accuracy of the results depends crucially on the ansatz for the wave function. Here we perform the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations in the case of small systems at finite temperature using the complex Langevin method (CLM), which has been successfully applied to various interesting systems with the sign problem over the decade. In particular, we show the existence of a parameter region in which the validity criterion for the CLM is satisfied and the expectation value of the energy obtained by exact diagonalization is correctly reproduced. Thus the CLM can be a complementary approach to the variational method for large systems.

Representation dependence of the neutron-proton kinetic energy in adiabatic deuteron stripping

Deuteron stripping reactions such as (d,p) are a main tool for studying the single-particle structure of nuclei, and they are usually analyzed with the adiabatic distorted-wave approximation (ADWA). With nonlocal nucleon optical potentials, ADWA cross sections change by tens of percent, up to a factor of two, depending on which realistic neutron-proton interaction describes the deuteron. Continuum-discretized calculations change much less, and exact Faddeev calculations reduce the spread by about a factor of ten. Should this sensitivity be read as a probe of neutron-proton physics at short distances? One identified route for it in ADWA is a single number, the neutron-proton kinetic energy averaged over the region where the two nucleons interact. I change the AV18 interaction only at short distances, keeping neutron-proton scattering, the deuteron binding energy, and the long-range tail of the deuteron unchanged. This number then rises from 218 to 314 MeV, more than half of its spread among five realistic interactions, while the coefficient that sets the low-momentum shape of the form factor moves by only one percent of its realistic range. The number therefore reflects how the interaction is written, not anything measured. It enters ADWA through two features that the other calculations treat differently: ADWA weights the deuteron where the two nucleons are close, and it assigns the deuteron energy to the pair however fast the two nucleons move. For this short-range change, an average that keeps the full Gaussian shape of the nonlocal potential, instead of expanding it to lowest order, rises by only 6 MeV against 96 MeV.
