An Energy Efficient Wearable for Monitoring Elderly People Health
Abstract
The aged population is exposed to risk situations, like falls, sudden changes in vital signs, and faints. These situations become common at this life stage due to a decrease in body capacity and illnesses increase. This scenario imposes attention on families and the national health system. Some studies propose to overcome this problem through elderly health monitoring systems based on smartphones, smartwatches, and other equipment that usually cover low-efficient communication systems and low battery life. This paper proposes an efficient health monitoring system based on Sigfox IoT service and a watch-type wearable device for sensing elderly motion, location, and vital signs to predict risk situations designed to achieve at least 30-days of battery life. Our experimental results show that this architecture is a low-cost, low-power, efficient, and feasible elderly health monitoring solution.
