The physics of deep-interior convective shell boundaries in a massive pre-supernova star: Internal gravity wave mixing at the $N^2$ peak

Abstract

The physics of convective boundary mixing involves concepts such as penetration and overshooting and has been mostly characterized for envelope and core convection. For the burning shells deep inside massive stars in their final stages, the convective boundary remains poorly understood. 1D stellar-evolution codes typically place a steep entropy gradient and the corresponding narrow \brunt{} ($N^2$) peak at a lower convective shell boundary. Based on high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic simulations of a $25 \rm{M_\odot}$ star 11 days before core collapse, we find that convection excites high-frequency internal gravity waves at the $N^2$ peak representing the C-shell convection bottom. These waves efficiently mix entropy and species and the $N^2$ peak erodes by ${\sim}40\%$ within hours, correspondingly reducing the entropy gradient. The wave-driven diffusion coefficient is $D\approx 5\text{--}6\times 10^{9} \rm{cm}^2 \rm{second}^{-1}$ at the $N^2$ peak in numerically converged simulations. Our simulations show that the dominant physics at this boundary is mixing due to internal gravity waves. Extrapolated with the time-dependent $D$ coefficient from the 3D simulations, the entropy step across the peak decreases by 40--85\% within half a day, thereby reducing the density, temperature and entropy gradients that set the accretion-rate drop a stalled supernova shock encounters. This physics is not included in present-day 1D models and enters the structural parameters that predict explodability. Flattening the gradients days before collapse favors an O--C shell merger, which could reshape pre-collapse nucleosynthesis. Without this physics 1D models carry too sharp gradients that introduce previously unaccounted systematic errors into the explodability surveys, yield tables and chemical-evolution studies built on them.

Search for double-line spectroscopic binaries in RAVE survey

I present a study for double-line spectroscopic binaries content in RAVE DR6 spectra, using composite spectral model. Three complementing selections found 2813 composite spectra, belonging to 2605 unique targets. Also these results were compared with automatic classification based on t-SNE map, which shows good agreement. Additionally I identified several spectra affected by problems with wavelength calibration.

Carbon in J0815+4729: Casting a shadow of doubt on the interpretation of CH absorption in the most primitive stars

Aims. We revisit the carbon abundance in the primitive iron-poor star J0815+4729 ([Fe/H] = -5.49). J0815+4729 is so carbon-enhanced and oxygen-rich that, in addition to CH and C2 molecular lines, weaker neutral atomic transitions are measurable in its spectrum, providing a unique opportunity to explore the line formation of C I and O I transitions in such an extremely iron-deficient star. Methods. Based on high-resolution spectroscopy and newly constructed atomic models for carbon and oxygen, we present the first investigation to derive carbon and oxygen abundances of this hyper iron-poor star from neutral atomic transitions under non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) conditions. Results. The carbon abundance derived from C I lines is A(C)NLTE = 8.08+-0.07, consistent with that inferred from C2 lines (A(C)LTE =7.96 +- 0.08), but around 0.6 dex higher than the value from CH lines (A(C)LTE = 7.47 +- 0.17). Since CH lines are the most commonly-used carbon abundance indicator for extremely metal-poor stars, this result casts doubt on the quantitative interpretation of CH absorption in the most primitive stars. We confirm that J0815+4729 is one of the most carbon-enhanced stars with [Fe/H] <= -4.5 known to date. We have also determined A(O)NLTE as 7.25 +- 0.11, with NLTE corrections of around -0.11 dex. The carbon-to-oxygen ratio of the star is [C/O] = 1.06 +- 0.1.

Formation Dynamics of a Rotating Solar Spicule-like Event and Associated Energy-Mass Transport

We performed three-dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamic(3D RMHD) simulations in an upward-directed (positive-polarity) open magnetic field with an initial background strength of 10 G. We identified vortex-associated spicule-like events and carried out a detailed analysis of one representative event. Prior to the formation of this spicule-like event, a photospheric vortex appears and twists the magnetic field lines, then develops upward into higher atmospheric layers, forming a magnetic tornado system. This event is generated during this process. At the periphery of this magnetic tornado, twisted magnetic field lines with negative vertical components reconnect with both external positive-polarity background fields and central positive-polarity fields. The magnetic reconnection sites rise and rotate together with the developed magnetic tornado, and many jet-like substructures in this event are closely associated with plasma upward ejections from these reconnection regions. A vertical force analysis shows that, for this event, plasma uplift in the photosphere and lower chromosphere is dominated by the pressure-gradient force, whereas in the upper chromosphere, the Lorentz force gradually becomes dominant. At a height of about 4 Mm above the solar surface, this event produces a mean upward mass flux density on the order of $10^{-7}~{\rm kg~m^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ and a mean upward Poynting flux density of approximately $525~{\rm W~m^{-2}}$. The wave-mode decomposition results show that the energy transport associated with the rotational spicule-like event is dominated by the Alfvén mode. Alfvén waves, fast-mode waves, and slow-mode waves carry energy into the lower corona in an approximate ratio of $10:7:3$.
