Markerless Multi-Modal Autonomous Robotic Inspection of Large Space Structures

Abstract

Future orbital infrastructures, such as deployable antennas, solar farms, and large orbital platforms will require autonomous inspection systems able to operate with limited prior knowledge and without cooperative markers. Current on-orbit servicing approaches often rely on predefined trajectories, standard interfaces, fiducial markers or accurate target models, which limits scalability for large, heterogeneous or partially unknown structures. This paper presents a markerless autonomous robotic inspection pipeline in which 3D reconstruction is used as an inspection-support representation. The system integrates a Kinova Gen2 manipulator with an end-effector-mounted multimodal sensor head composed of an RGB-D camera, a thermal camera and a 2D LiDAR. The pipeline estimates an approximate inspection volume, generates viewpoints, plans collision-free motions with MoveIt, and synchronously records RGB-D images, thermal data, and robot poses in ROS2. Candidate reconstruction methods were evaluated to select a practical method for this pipeline, with Nerfacto used for geometric reconstruction and Thermal-Nerfacto used to demonstrate thermal-aware rendering for inspection. Validation in a Gazebo-based simulator and preliminary laboratory tests reveal that the proposed system can autonomously acquire spatially coherent inspection data and produce reconstructions suitable for visual and geometric assessment, representing a step towards inspection of large non-cooperative space structures.

Schrödinger's Navigator: Imagining an Ensemble of Futures for Zero-Shot Object Navigation

Zero-shot object navigation (ZSON) requires robots to find target objects in unseen environments without task-specific fine-tuning or pre-built maps, a key capability for general-purpose service robots. Yet methods that perform well in simulation often degrade in cluttered real-world scenes with severe occlusion and latent hazards, where large unseen regions make single-scene inference brittle and unsafe. We propose Schrödinger's Navigator, a belief-aware framework that reasons at inference time over multiple trajectory-conditioned imagined 3D futures. Given candidate paths, a trajectory-conditioned 3D world model predicts hypothetical observations and maintains a superposition of plausible scene realizations rather than committing to one map. An adaptive occluder-aware sampler directs imagination to uncertainty-critical regions, while a Future-Aware Value Map (FAVM) aggregates imagined futures for robust, proactive action selection. Experiments in simulation and on a physical Go2 quadruped show that Schrödinger's Navigator outperforms strong ZSON baselines, improving hidden-target discovery and risk-aware waypoint selection in occlusion-heavy navigation scenarios. These results highlight imagined 3D futures as a scalable and generalizable strategy for zero-shot navigation in uncertain real-world environments.

OxyGen: Unified KV Cache Management for VLA Inference under Multi-Task Parallelism

Embodied AI agents increasingly require parallel execution of multiple tasks, such as manipulation, conversation, and memory construction, from shared observations under distinct time constraints. Recent Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT) Vision-Language-Action Models (VLAs) support such heterogeneous outputs, yet existing inference systems incur redundant computation and resource contention when serving concurrent tasks on-device. We identify isolated KV cache management as the root cause. To address this, we propose unified KV cache management, an inference design that treats the KV cache as a first-class shared resource across tasks and control cycles. This abstraction enables two key optimizations: cross-task KV sharing eliminates redundant prefill of shared observations, while cross-frame continuous batching batches unfinished language requests from different frames and advances them within a per-frame decoding budget. We implement this design in OxyGen and evaluate $π_{0.5}$ on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and Jetson AGX Thor. OxyGen achieves up to 3.7$\times$ speedup over isolated execution, delivering over 200 tokens/s language throughput and 70 Hz action frequency simultaneously on RTX 4090. We also validate the design on Xiaomi-Robotics-0 and StarVLA across different backbones and expert configurations. We further demonstrate the inference gains on a humanoid robot with on-board Jetson AGX Thor.

PanoAir: A Panoramic Visual-Inertial SLAM with Cross-Time Real-World UAV Dataset

Accurate pose estimation is fundamental for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications, where Visual-Inertial SLAM (VI-SLAM) provides a cost-effective solution for localization and mapping. However, existing VI-SLAM methods mainly rely on sensors with limited fields of view (FoV), which can lead to drift and even failure in complex UAV scenarios. Although panoramic cameras provide omnidirectional perception to improve robustness, panoramic VI-SLAM and corresponding real-world datasets for UAVs remain underexplored. To address this limitation, we first construct a real-world panoramic visual-inertial dataset covering diverse flight conditions, including varying illumination, altitudes, trajectory lengths, and motion dynamics. To achieve accurate and robust pose estimation under such challenging UAV scenarios, we propose a panoramic VI-SLAM framework that exploits the omnidirectional FoV via the proposed panoramic feature extraction and panoramic loop closure, enhancing feature constraints and ensuring global consistency. Extensive experiments on both the proposed dataset and public benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves superior accuracy, robustness, and consistency, completing all 17 sequences without tracking failure and reducing the ATE by up to 47.1% compared with the best-performing baseline. Moreover, deployment on an embedded platform validates its practical applicability, achieving comparable computational efficiency to PC implementations.
