Near-infrared spectra of chemically peculiar stars and applications to kilonova spectra

Abstract

Kilonova spectra provide information on rapid neutron-capture nucleosynthesis in neutron star mergers. However, it remains challenging to identify individual elements in kilonova spectra, primarily due to incomplete atomic data for heavy elements at near-infrared wavelengths. Recent work demonstrated that spectra of chemically peculiar stars offer excellent laboratory for studying kilonova spectra. In this paper, to expand our understanding of strong transitions of heavy elements at near-infrared wavelengths, we present high-resolution near-infrared spectra of 14 chemically peculiar stars covering a range of effective temperatures, surface gravities, and abundance patterns, obtained with Subaru/IRD. The Sr II, Ce III, and Gd III lines, previously suggested to be among the strongest transitions, are detected in the spectra of most of our targets, confirming their intrinsic importance. In addition, Eu II and Nd III lines are detected in several stars. By comparing observed equivalent widths and abundance ratios, we show that under a highly heavy-element-enriched abundance pattern, Eu II and Nd III lines may contribute to kilonova spectral features comparably to Sr II. Importantly, we find no unidentified lines systematically stronger than these transitions despite the larger stellar sample. These results further support the primary importance of the Sr II and Ce III transitions and provide new insights into the potential contribution of Eu II and Nd III.

On the formation of subdwarf B stars via engulfment of substellar companions I. Conditions for and occurrence of envelope ejection events

The canonical scenario for the formation of subdwarf B (sdB) stars involves the ejection of the progenitor's envelope near the tip of the Red Giant Branch (RGB), concurrent with the onset of core He-burning. While binary interactions are known to dominate sdB formation, the origin of apparently single sdB stars remains uncertain. We investigate the conditions under which an sdB progenitor can eject its envelope through the engulfment of a substellar companion, using an energy balance approach. We simulate the orbital evolution of substellar companions during the subgiant and RGB phases of their host stars (1.2-2.0 M_Sun) to determine the onset of engulfment and calculate the energy released during inspiral within the stellar envelope. By comparing this energy with the envelope binding energy and exploring different efficiencies for its deposition, we identify the conditions required for envelope ejection. We then estimate the occurrence of such events using observed population of substellar companions. The engulfment of substellar objects can lead to envelope ejection within a limited region of the mass-semi-major axis parameter space, whose extent depends on the host star's properties and energy transfer efficiency. The minimum companion mass required for ejection increases with decreasing efficiency and increasing stellar mass. As a result, the frequency of envelope ejection is strongly influenced by the distribution of substellar companions, particularly by the paucity of objects in the brown-dwarf desert. The engulfment of low-mass brown dwarfs and massive planets during the late RGB can provide sufficient energy to eject the stellar envelope, which could ultimately lead to the formation of sdB stars. Our results define the region of parameter space where this mechanism is energetically possible and provide a guide for future multidimensional hydrodynamical simulations.

Formation of adducts of C$_6$H with Na$^+$, Mg$^+$ and Al$^+$ metal cations by radiative association

The Mg-bearing cations MgC$_4$H$^+$, MgC$_6$H$^+$, MgC$_3$N$^+$, and MgC$_5$N$^+$ have been recently observed in the carbon-rich envelope IRC\,+10216. These species are thought to form upon radiative association between Mg$^+$ and the corresponding neutral radical. This work aims to determine the radiative association rate coefficients for the cations Al$^+$, Mg$^+$, and Na$^+$ reacting with carbon chain radicals to estimate the relative importance of metal-bearing carbon cations for each of these metals. For this purpose we use statistical methods in combination with highly accurate ab initio calculations to obtain the radiative association rate coefficient. Moreover, anisotropic effects beyond mono-dimensional capture model are considered, providing a more reliable description of the simulated processes.} The radiative association rate coefficients to form Mg-, Al- and Na-C$_6$H$^+$, as well as MgC$_4$H$^+$, MgC$_3$N$^+$, and MgC$_5$N$^+$, are calculated with the new restrictions considered in this work. These new rate coefficients are included in a chemical model of the C-rich AGB envelope IRC\,+10216. The abundances of MgC$_4$H$^+$, MgC$_6$H$^+$, and MgC$_5$N$^+$ are consistent with observations, with differences no greater than one order of magnitude, corroborating radiative association as a plausible formation mechanism for these adducts. However, the calculated abundance of MgC$_3$N$^+$ is about two orders of magnitude lower than observed, which indicates that either the chemistry of this species is significantly different from the others or the calculated rate coefficient is too low. The abundances obtained for Na-C$_6$H$^+$ and Al-C$_6$H$^+$ are around two orders of magnitude lower than for Mg, making very difficult to detect the analogous metal-bearing cations in IRC\,+10216.

A Comprehensive Study of the Long-Period Cataclysmic Variable V630 Cassiopeiae

We present a comprehensive review of V630 Cassiopeiae, which is a very long-period cataclysmic variable. Based on new observations combining spectroscopy and high-resolution photometry provided by TESS and precise distance data from GAIA, we confirm and extend previously described characteristics. The light curves show differential behaviors between different epochs, attributed to changes in the disk's brightness distribution, likely due to non-axial structures such as precessing eccentric disks. The spectroscopy reveals complex Ha line profiles, with dual components and an emission distribution that suggests a large, asymmetric, and possibly precessing disk, rather than a classic shock structure in the matter-flow impact region. Doppler tomography indicates that the emission originates at the periphery of the disk, distributed in an asymmetric pattern rather than a compact point, complicating the interpretation of radial velocities and limiting their use for accurately determining masses. Through photometric and spectroscopic analysis, we established a donor mass estimate with an approximate value of 0.38 Ms at the adopted distance of 2409 pc, with significant uncertainty related to distance and other systematic factors. Finally, using the parameters of V630 Cas, binary evolution simulations were conducted with MESA incorporating CARB magnetic braking prescription to identify an evolutionary sequence that explains its properties.
