Improvements of Classical Eigenvalue Inequalities I: Quantitative Hersch-deficit and the Joint Spectral Range on the Two-Sphere

Abstract

For area-$4π$ metrics on the two-sphere, we obtain quantitative refinements of classical eigenvalue inequalities and study the joint behavior of the first two Laplace eigenvalues. We prove a sharp quadratic improvement of Hersch's reciprocal-sum inequality in terms of the first eigenvalue, together with a simultaneous quadratic estimate for the first three eigenvalues and a geometric stability result for admissible measures. We also establish a quantitative refinement of Nadirashvili's second-eigenvalue inequality with sharp exponential scale. Finally, using explicit spectral families due to Petrides, a degree argument, and a refined finite-dimensional matrix method, we obtain nontrivial inner and outer bounds for the joint range of $(λ_1,λ_2)$.

Eigenvalue optimization in higher dimensions and $p$-harmonic maps

We prove existence results for optimization problems for the $k$th Laplace eigenvalue on closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension $m \geq 3$, depending on the choice of normalization. One such normalization leads to eigenvalue optimization within a conformal class, for which existence of maximizers was previously known only in dimension two. We also prove that all absolutely continuous maximizers of the normalized eigenvalue functionals are always induced by $p$-harmonic maps into spheres, where $p \in [2,m]$. For $p$ sufficiently close to $m$, the maximizers are always Hölder-continuous, whereas for $p<m$ no bubbling occurs. A key tool in our analysis is the application of techniques from the theory of topological tensor products, which appear to be well suited for studying eigenvalue-related optimization problems.

Dry Ten Martini Problem in the Subcritical Type I Regime

We establish a resolvent factorization of the hyperbolic projection associated with the finite-range dual operators, by a kernel with exponential off-diagonal decay. As an application, we prove that, for every irrational frequency and every analytic potential, each subcritical Type I energy satisfying the gap-labelling condition is an endpoint of an open spectral gap. This confirms the conjecture of Ge--Jitomirskaya--You [GJY,You] in the subcritical regime.

Off-diagonal bounds for spectral projector kernels

We study the growth of the spectral function of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $n$. For $n\geq 3$ we show that for any $x\in M$ there is a full measure subset $Z_x\subset M$ such that for all $y\in Z_x$ \[E_Λ(x,y) = O_{M,x,y,\varepsilon}(Λ^{n/2}(\logΛ)^{3/2}(\log\logΛ)^{1/2+\varepsilon}). \] For $n=2$ we prove a stronger statement. For any $x\in M$ there is a full measure subset $Z_x\subset M$ such that for all $y\in Z_x$ \[E_Λ(x,y) = O_{M,x,y,\varepsilon}(Λ^{5/6}(\logΛ)^{1/6}(\log\logΛ)^{1/6+\varepsilon}) .\]
