Accelerating systems as probes of Lorentz violation

Abstract

We investigate the Fulling-Davies-Unruh effect in a local Lorentz-violating effective field theory, focusing on the quantum-field response of accelerated detectors. We canonically quantize a real scalar field exactly in the coefficients for Lorentz violation. The dispersion relation, Hamiltonian, and massless and massive Wightman functions are obtained. We determine the conditions under which the scalar dynamics preserves boost symmetry and distinguish these from the weaker conditions required for stationarity along a single accelerated worldline. The Wightman functions are used to construct the finite-time Unruh-DeWitt response for a uniformly accelerated detector. For generic coefficients the response is nonstationary and depends on both the duration and temporal location of the measurement. The spectrum, which is the resulting excitation rate as a function of the energy level difference in the detector, is obtained numerically. It shows discernable differences with the usual massive thermal spectrum for dimensionless coefficients on the order of $10^{-7}$. Experimental implications of the result are discussed. As an alternative viewpoint, we place Lorentz violation in the point-particle sector, derive the exact trajectory generated by a constant electric field, and study the proper-time Fourier response of a conventional scalar wave along the modified trajectory.

Symmetry Descent in M-theory, Part I: A Twelve-Dimensional Parent Theory

We initiate a symmetry descent procedure for M-theory engineered quantum field theories. Starting from a higher form BF theory supplemented by a cubic bulk topological interaction, we construct a gauge-invariant bulk-boundary system whose edge modes acquire generalized Maxwell--Chern--Simons dynamics after the introduction of a metric-dependent boundary action. The nonlinear contribution to the boundary equation is induced entirely by the cubic bulk interaction. In the case of twelve dimensional bulk parent, the resulting boundary conditions reproduce the local flux equations of the eleven-dimensional supergravity $C$-field, including the gravitational $I_8$ correction. Thus, the electric--magnetic pairing and the nonlinear Maxwell--Chern--Simons dynamics descend from a single 12D topological model. Using Hypothesis H, we identify the bulk equations with the Sullivan model of $S^4$ and interpret their nonlinear gauge transformations as homotopies. We then propose a twisted 4-cohomotopy quantization of the bulk fields and a homotopy pullback description of the coupled bulk--boundary field space. The construction provides both a local dynamical mechanism for M-theory symmetry descent and a candidate global characterization of its fields.

A Geodesic Route toward Holography beyond AdS: Tessellating the Schwarzschild Black Hole

In vacuum anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, the geometry admits a perfect tessellation by a geodesic network. This tessellation characterizes the background exactly, and a partial entanglement entropy (PEE) tensor-network toy model of AdS/CFT can be defined on it. It has so far been unclear whether this construction can be extended beyond vacuum AdS. In this paper we take the first step in this direction. We show that the exterior region of the Schwarzschild black hole and its Einstein--Rosen bridge are perfectly tessellated by a specific geodesic gas emitted from the boundary, so that Crofton reconstruction holds in these regions. We then prove that such a geodesic tessellation and the Crofton reconstruction it defines extend to more generic Riemannian manifolds. This allows us to construct a PEE tensor-network model of holographic duality on more generic geometric backgrounds. In the case of the PEE tensor-network model for the Schwarzschild background, we can concretely realize the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy, the Ryu--Takayanagi formula and the ER=EPR proposal. Our approach opens a new route towards holographic toy models beyond AdS/CFT.

Emergent Symmetries in Ensemble Averages

It is widely believed that there are no exact global symmetries in quantum gravity. We review recent works showing that global symmetries can nevertheless emerge after ensemble averages of theories, as encountered in holography. As a precision case study, we discuss the ensemble average of two-dimensional Narain-type conformal field theories associated with an even quadratic form of general signature, which is computed by the Siegel-Weil formula and interpreted as a sum over geometries in a three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory. Global symmetries of the bulk anyons can emerge after the average, as T-dualities relating different theories in the ensemble are "folded" into symmetries of a single theory (duality origami). We discuss the relation to the Swampland program, including the emergence of global symmetries at infinite distance. Finally, we recast strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking (SWSSB) of mixed states as an emergence of symmetries in ensemble averages; in holography, wormholes connecting the two sides of a thermofield-double construction provide its bulk realization. This motivates a new Swampland conjecture.
