RG Limit Cycles in BKT Flows $\equiv$ Periodic Real-Time Dynamics in the Current-Current Perturbed $SU(2)_1$ WZW Model

Abstract

We establish an exact correspondence between renormalization-group (RG) evolution and real-time quantum dynamics in the anisotropic current-current perturbed $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. Using its integrable fermionic representation, we construct the exact time-dependent many-body wavefunction by means of the generalized Bethe ansatz and show that periodic boundary conditions lead to quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations associated with the XXZ trigonometric $R$-matrix, which corresponds to the quantum affine algebra $\mathcal{U}_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$ evaluated in its spin-$1/2$ evaluation representation. Consistency of these equations constrains the temporal evolution of the longitudinal and transverse interaction strengths. In the universal regime, these integrability conditions are exactly equivalent to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless RG flow equations upon identifying physical time with the logarithmic RG scale. Consequently, the RG limit cycles of the anisotropic current-current perturbed $SU(2)_1$ WZW model are realized as periodic real-time evolution of its interaction strengths. Our results provide an exact dynamical realization of RG limit cycles and establish a direct connection between cyclic RG flows, quantum integrability, and periodically driven interacting quantum field theories.

Type II embeddings for $d=6$ Einstein-Maxwell gauged supergravity

Bi-spinor and G-structure methods are used to classify the possible consistent truncations of type II supergravity to $d=6$ Einstein-Maxwell (gauged) supergravity, and its consistent sub-sectors. In the absence of R-symmetry gauging and a tensor multiplet we establish that every supersymmetric Mink$_6$ solution defines an embedding of the $d=6$ theory. Adding a tensor multiplet places restrictions on these embeddings, but embeddings still exist. In the presence of R-symmetry gauging the internal spaces of the embeddings are neither related to Mink$_6$ or AdS$_6$. Under the assumption that the internal space contains a single U(1) isometry housing the $d=6$ gauge field we classify the possible embedding manifolds. We find two classes of embedding for the entire theory, one of which is governed by a Toda-like equation and contains at least one prototype bounded embedding, albeit containing likely un-physical singularities. In the absence of a tensor multiple the classes of embeddings become more permissive, though the PDEs governing them become more complicated in general.

Groenewold-Moyal twists, integrable spin-chains and AdS/CFT

We take the first steps to address via integrability the spectral problem of AdS/CFT dual pairs deformed by Groenewold-Moyal twists. In particular, we start by considering a twisted spin-chain that couples, through a Groenewold-Moyal twist deformation, two $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-invariant spin-chains. We interpret this deformed spin-chain as a deformation of a subsector of the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ spin-chain, but the construction shares qualitative features also with the corresponding deformation of the $AdS_5/CFT_4$ spin-chain, for example. As in similar types of deformations, we show that there exists a certain basis in which the spin-chain Hamiltonian takes a Jordan-block form. At the same time, by working in the basis of eigenstates of the generators used to construct the Groenewold-Moyal twist, the Hamiltonian appears to be diagonalisable and with a deformed spectrum. Employing the method of the Baxter equation, we write down the energy of the ground state and of excited states in a perturbation of the deformation parameter. We then consider the string-theory side of the duality, where the twist is realised as a deformation of AdS of the type of Maldacena-Russo-Hashimoto-Itzhaki. We construct a deformation of the usual BMN classical solution, and in the large-$J$ limit we match the leading $\mathcal O(J^{-3})$ term of the energy of the spin-chain groundstate with a conserved charge of the string classical solution. Differently from the undeformed setup as well as similar kinds of deformations, we find that the general expression of this charge of the string sigma-model is non-local, and that it does not correspond to a standard isometry. Nevertheless, it can be computed from the monodromy matrix and it is part of the tower of conserved charges provided by integrability.

Stochastic inflation as an open quantum system II: open effective field theory and stochastic matching

We further develop the proposal in Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ \textbf{136} 071501 that interprets stochastic inflation as an open quantum system, by constructing the open effective field theory for the reduced density matrix of long wavelength modes. We clarify that this open effective field theory enjoys two renormalization group flows: the conventional Wilsonian channel, and a stochastic channel arising from the openness that has no counterpart in ordinary Wilsonian effective field theory. Focusing on the stochastic channel in the hard cutoff scheme, we identify both Gaussian and non-Gaussian diffusion as effective operators in the influence functional, and show that they are required by matching onto correlators and form factors of the perturbative full theory through a method-of-region in time. Beyond Gaussian order, the matching data are no longer local Wilson coefficients but nonlocal and non-Markovian Wilson kernels. We then obtain the bare Hamiltonian density of this open effective field theory and derive its nonlocal functional master equations, including the Fokker-Planck equation for the diagonal density matrix and the Klein-Kramers equation for the Wigner functional, with their zero-modess simplifications discussed. Finally, we take a first step toward a continuum version of this open effective field theory, replacing the hard cutoff by an analytic regulator in the stochastic channel, and demonstrate stochastic renormalization using a massive scalar as an example.
