Measures of Chaotic Advection in Simulations of Active Nematics

Abstract

Active nematics are non-equilibrium fluids composed of rod-like self-propelled units that collectively generate large-scale coherent flows. Here, we focus on a canonical experimental system: an active nematic fluid in $2D$ driven by ATP, composed of densely packed, extended microtubule (MT) bundles cross-linked by kinesin motors. An intriguing feature of this system is the creation and annihilation of topological defects with topological charge $\pm1/2$, due to the fracturing of the material. Experiments confirm that the positive ($+1/2$) defects serve as "virtual stirring rods" that move around each other in a complex braiding pattern. This collective braiding motion of positive defects stretches and folds the fluid itself, i.e., produces macroscale chaotic advection. The degree of self-mixing due to the chaotic advection can be measured using topological entropy and the Lyapunov exponent. Our goal is to determine whether continuum models of MT-based active nematic fluid can reproduce these measurements. To this end, we use two continuum models: the traditional Beris-Edwards (BE) model and the more recently developed Beris-Edwards model with enhanced nematic locking (BENL). The difference between the two models is the adoption of the "nematic locking principle", which states that an individual MT bundle cannot rotate independently of its neighbors due to steric interactions among elongated dense MT bundles. This principle holds in the BENL model except in small localized areas of the material domain where the material fractures, specifically near the creation and annihilation of topological defects. We employ several numerical methods to estimate measures of chaotic advection using both models. Our study shows that the BENL model more accurately reproduces experimental measures of self-mixing driven by chaotic advection in MT-based active nematic fluids.

Modelling the passive and active response of skeletal muscles within the adapted Voigt representation framework

We present a constitutive model for the passive and active response of skeletal muscles. At variance with more classical approaches, the model is developed exploiting adapted Voigt representations of strain and stress tensors within the context of nonlinear Cauchy elasticity. This framework allows us to identify non-trivial stress-strain relations in a rather direct way from experimental data, enhancing the mechanical interpretability of the material functions that describe the tissue response and obtaining additional insight on the distinct role of the contractile fibres and of the surrounding extracellular matrix. We propose a two-material model, with an additive splitting of the stress contributions, in which only one component depends on an activation parameter. The constitutive model for the passive behaviour satisfactorily predicts the nonlinear stress response to elongation at different relative orientations with respect to the fibre direction and highlights the dominant role of the extracellular matrix. The activation model, essentially determined by the mechanics of the contractile fibres, captures well the isometric stress response of tetanised tissue through the prescription of an along-fibre active strain that also depends on the matrix deformation.

Light selects non-equilibrium states of phase-separated droplets

Driving phase-separated droplets out of equilibrium can oppose coarsening and trigger division. Selecting and sustaining these distinct states remains an important experimental challenge. Here, we use reversible photoswitching to tune molecular driving in DNA-azobenzene coacervates confined in microfluidic droplets without chemical fuel depletion or waste accumulation. Single-wavelength illumination sustaining bidirectional molecular switching arrests droplet coarsening at a finite size. Dual-wavelength illumination with wavelength-dependent penetration depths generates spatially asymmetric molecular driving within uniformly illuminated droplets, producing persistent interfacial instabilities. Under low-salt conditions, droplets divide and undergo recurrent growth-division cycles. Kinetic and thermodynamic measurements reveal how flux balance, phase stability and droplet size govern these distinct non-equilibrium states. These findings establish optically controlled molecular driving as a route to selecting sustained non-equilibrium droplet dynamics.

Emergence of Nanoscale Modulation in Liquid Crystals as a Result of Short-Range Order Parameter Condensation

The discovery of the twist-bend nematic phase in liquid crystals composed of bent-core and dimeric molecules has revealed an unexpected mechanism for the spontaneous formation of nanoscale periodic structures in soft condensed matter. Unlike conventional liquid-crystalline phases, the twist-bend phase exhibits a nanoscale heliconical modulation despite the absence of molecular chirality. In this note, dedicated to the late R. Meyer, we discuss a Landau phenomenological interpretation of this phenomenon. The central idea is that a short-range orientational order parameter undergoes condensation, giving rise to a heliconical structure characterized by a finite wave vector. We emphasize that the conventional nematic order is already long-ranged, whereas the additional order parameter describes local orientational correlations hidden within the nematic state. The resulting phase transition bears a close analogy to the de Gennes theory of the nematic--smectic-A transition. Fluctuation effects are expected to drive the transition weakly first order. The theory also predicts a new Goldstone mode associated with the spontaneously broken continuous symmetry of the heliconical state
