Blackened BPS: the end of the thermal BMN branch

Abstract

We study the thermodynamics of the BMN matrix model at large $N$ and strong coupling, using its dual black holes in eleven-dimensional supergravity. Within the consistent truncation to two-dimensional $SO(9)$ gauged supergravity, the static $SO(3)\times SO(6)$-invariant black holes solve ordinary differential equations, which we solve to high precision. We formulate holographic renormalisation for this truncation and fix the finite counterterms using a supersymmetric solution. This gives the energy, the entropy and the response to the BMN mass independently, and we verify the first law and the Smarr relation along the branch. The thermal branch ends at a critical value of $μ/T$, which power-law fits place at $4π$ with an estimated uncertainty below $10^{-10}$. The first-order transition inferred in earlier work, where the free energy was reconstructed from the entropy, does not survive, and an independent eleven-dimensional calculation agrees with ours over the range it covers. Instead, the free energy, the entropy and the mass response approach their values in the confined phase continuously at the end of the branch, where the solutions become singular. If this branch remains the dominant one up to its end point, the transition therefore coincides with the singularity. Near the end of the branch, the scalar fields follow a solution of the supersymmetric first-order equations, while the metric carries a nontrivial blackening factor. The horizon develops a neck whose profile is universal, with radii growing as the $2/5$ power of the distance from the pinch. Within the range we resolve, the geometry is not that of the Ricci-flat double cone which governs mergers of vacuum black holes.

Resource-Theoretic Quantifiers of Weak and Strong Symmetry Breaking: Strong Entanglement Asymmetry and Beyond

Quantifying how much a quantum state breaks a symmetry is essential for characterizing phases, nonequilibrium dynamics, and open-system behavior. For mixed states, however, conventional diagnostics of weak symmetry breaking can miss a stronger form of symmetry breaking associated with the possibility of exchanging conserved charges with an environment. We develop a resource theory of strong symmetry breaking by identifying the appropriate free states and free operations, and, for channels on a fixed system, by showing that the latter are precisely the operations realizable without exchanging the conserved charge with the environment. We systematically construct measures of strong symmetry breaking, including strong entanglement asymmetry and covariance matrices of symmetry generators, for a broad class of symmetry groups. We further completely characterize i.i.d. convertibility between arbitrary states under any compact Lie group strong symmetry. This identifies the combinations of resource-theoretically valid measures that quantify strong symmetry breaking for arbitrary states, including all mixed states. In particular, for $U(1)$ symmetry, if the states have positive variances of the conserved quantity and equal strong-symmetry periods, the conversion rate is completely determined by the variance ratio whenever the input is pure or the output is weak symmetric. Thus, for these state conversions, the variance of the conserved quantity plays an operational role analogous to that of entanglement entropy in entanglement theory or quantum Fisher information in the resource theory of weak asymmetry. We further show how weak symmetry breaking is irreversibly converted into strong symmetry breaking in open-system dynamics. We illustrate the framework with examples from quantum field theory, strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking, and a strong-symmetry analogue of Mpemba-type dynamics.

Anomaly Induced Current in Boundary Lifshitz Field Theory

We study quantum transport phenomena induced by anisotropic Lifshitz scale anomaly in a boundary Lifshitz field theory (BLFT) coupled to an external electromagnetic background. In this context, we obtain the anisotropic scale anomaly in Lifshitz field theories coupled to a background $U(1)$ gauge field and subsequently compute the anomaly induced near boundary current in a BLFT. Focusing on 5D BLFTs, we find that the temporal and spatial components of the induced current exhibit distinct power law dependencies on the distance from the boundary, reflecting the intrinsic time-space anisotropy of the theory. We further derive this anomalous current holographically from the bulk dual of BLFT and find that the temporal component is independent of the boundary conditions while the spatial component depends explicitly on them. The distance dependence is in exact agreement with the dual field theory result.

$S^3$ partition functions and Equivariant CY$_4 $/CY$_3$ correspondence from Quantum curves

We study the perturbative large-$N$ expansion of the round three-sphere partition function in a class of M2-brane theories, including flavored SYM and ABJM theories as well as more general 3d theories admitting dual $(p,q)$ 5-brane web descriptions. Using the Fermi gas formalism and quantum curve techniques, we derive the Airy-function representation of the partition function and find exact agreement with predictions based on equivariant constant maps in topological string theory proposed in [1]. In particular, we provide affirmative tests of this proposal for the toric geometries $\mathbb{C} \times \mathcal{C}$ (the conifold), the cone over the Sasakian space $Q^{1,1,1}$, and $\mathbb{C} \times \mathrm{SPP}$ (the suspended pinch point). Motivated by a recent conjecture in [2], we further propose a novel equivariant correspondence between distinct toric Calabi-Yau manifolds of the form $\mathrm{CY}_4 \leftrightarrow \mathbb{C} \times\mathrm{CY}_3$, arising from relations between the corresponding quantum curves under specific constraints. This correspondence suggests an equivariant extension and points toward a geometric origin of the topological string/spectral theory (TS/ST) correspondence, while offering new insight into the structure of the holographic duality.
