Spontaneous Spin Polarization in Dense Quark Matter Reexamined

Abstract

The phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon density remains an open problem in QCD, with important implications for the internal structure and magnetic properties of neutron stars. We reexamine the emergence of a quark spin-polarized (QSP) phase in cold, dense quark matter within the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with tensor interactions, focusing on its dependence on regularization. We compare the traditional regularization scheme (TRS), where a sharp momentum cutoff is applied to both vacuum and medium contributions, with the medium separation scheme (MSS), where ultraviolet-divergent vacuum terms are isolated while finite medium-dependent phase-space contributions remain cutoff free. The two prescriptions lead to qualitatively different results. In TRS, the QSP condensate eventually collapses at high chemical potential, leading to nonmonotonic thermodynamic behavior and, for some couplings, violations of causality. In MSS, the QSP condensate instead increases monotonically with density, the equation of state remains causal, and the associated spontaneous magnetization grows toward high density. The persistence of spin polarization at high density may provide a microscopic contribution to the strong magnetic fields of compact stars, including magnetars. An exploratory hybrid-star construction further shows that the QSP phase can significantly modify the equation of state, stability trends, and mass-radius relations. These results highlight the importance of a consistent treatment of medium phase space and demonstrate the potential impact of a persistent spin-polarized quark phase on neutron-star physics.

Axion couplings in Orbifold GUTs

We consider the coupling of axions to gauge bosons in higher-dimensional Grand Unified Theories (GUT) inspired by string theory constructions with D-branes on orbifold singularities, the so-called orbifold GUTs. Due to their topological properties, axion couplings to gauge bosons are independent of the gauge symmetry reduction mechanism and the background geometry -- they only depend on the embedding of the SM into the UV gauge group. There are two kinds of axions in this class of theories: axions coming from gauge fields in the bulk and axions localised on the boundaries. The axion-photon coupling for the bulk axions coincide with the results from 4-dimensional GUTs, where axions which couple to photons necessarily couple also to QCD. The brane-localised axions can couple to photons independently of the QCD coupling, but if gauge couplings are approximately unified, the axions get large masses from unsuppressed instantons on the boundaries. The brane-localised axions can couple to photons independently of the QCD coupling, but if gauge couplings are approximately unified, they have a much more severe quality problem. We show that in generic UV completions they are expected to get large masses from instantons on the boundaries. This means that the ratio $g_{aγγ}/m_a$ is below (or equal to) the QCD axion value for all axions in orbifold GUTs, as is the case for unified theories in 4d.

Neutrino texture-zeros after JUNO's first results: Implications for long-baseline neutrino experiments

The recent results from the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment have significantly improved our knowledge of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ and the solar mass splitting $Δm^2_{21}$. We study the impact of these improved estimates on the validity of texture-zeros in the light neutrino mass matrix by assuming neutrinos to be of Majorana nature. Considering a diagonal charged lepton basis, we revisit the previously allowed one-zero and two-zero textures and check their validity by using updated neutrino data from JUNO. While JUNO data rule out one previously allowed two-zero texture, they also make predictions for other neutrino parameters more precise. We finally study the prospects of probing the currently allowed texture-zeros and their predicted correlations among neutrino parameters at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The inclusion of JUNO and reactor experiments strengthens DUNE's ability to constrain the allowed parameter space of both one-zero and two-zero textures. We also observe that DUNE benefits substantially from the complementarity with the T2HK experiment.

Entanglement metrics for a $B$-meson system

The $B$-factory experiments operate at electron-positron colliders with beam energies precisely tuned for optimal $B^{0}\text{-}\bar{B}^{0}$ meson pair production. These $B^{0}\text{-}\bar{B}^{0}$ meson pairs are entangled and offer a unique opportunity to explore quantum correlations and examine the foundational aspects of quantum mechanics. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis of entanglement metrics in the $B$-meson system within the framework of open quantum systems, which introduces decoherence due to interactions with the environment. We examine several distinct entanglement measures, each highlighting different facets of quantum entanglement and its sensitivity to decoherence effects. We further analyze the impact of decoherence by systematically varying the decoherence parameter across different scales
