Quantum Gravity in the Landau background gauge
Abstract
We examine, in the Landau background gauge, the effective action of a quantum theory of gravitational and matter fields. We analyse the BRST invariance of this theory and study the Ward identities which implement the symmetry of the background effective action. The off-shell and on-shell counterterm Lagrangians are explicitly calculated in this gauge at one-loop order. We argue that the matter self-energy in the Landau background gauge, which is finite to this order, may be finite also at higher loops.
