Matrix Product State Representatives of Symmetry-Protected Phases

Abstract

We provide a simple ansatz for finding integer spin $SO(3)\times\Z_2^T\times\Z_2^R$-invariant matrix product states representing a phase for each triple of $\Z_2$ topological indices studied in the literature by Tasaki \cite{tasakiheistop}\cite{tasakitop} and Ogata (corresponding to time-reversal and reflection symmetries) \cite{ogatatime}\cite{ogatareflection}. Every combination of trivial and non-trivial indices has a spin-$1$ $SU(2)$, time-reversal, and site-reflection symmetric MPS representative with injectivity length $l\leq 8$. We provide some exact examples for spin-$1$ and a Fortran program which will find representatives of any triple for any integer spin, as well as some data from random sampling for small spin. The existence of such states agrees with the classification of Chen, Gu, and Wen \cite{chen}, and with the recent results of Tasaki \cite{tasakinew} equating the hidden-order and one of Ogata's indices, wherein the Ogata index is that associated to the dihedral $D_2$ symmetry.

Uniformity theory of weighted composites

By including spatially varying volume fractions of the constituents, composites are obtained that are akin to functionally graded media. An extension of the mathematical apparatus of double groupoids is proposed to incorporate these materials with the aim of eventually classifying defects of misalignment and their time evolution.

Factorization Algebras for Linearized Gravity

The purpose of this work is to bring gravitational theories into play within the quickly developing framework of factorization algebras. We fit the causal structure of Lorentzian manifolds into categorical language, and in the globally hyperbolic case discover a convenient equivalence of coverages. Then, we show how both perturbative general relativity and perturbative conformal gravity define Batalin-Vilkovisky classical field theories. Finally, we describe how the observables of linearized general relativity define a particularly nice factorization algebra on the category of Ricci flat globally hyperbolic manifolds and present a few conjectures which arise in specific cases, primarily motivated by the study of black hole entropy as a conserved Noether charge.

Tensor invariants for multipartite entanglement classification

Organising the space of entanglement structures of a multipartite quantum system is a much more challenging task than its bipartite version: while the local unitary (LU) orbit of a bipartite pure state can be conveniently characterized by its entanglement spectrum, invariants of multipartite entanglement structures are comparatively difficult to define and work with. The root cause of this difference is that the bipartite problem can be reduced to the analysis of matrix invariants, while its multipartite version is governed by a much richer space of tensor invariants. The present work explores the latter through the lens of so-called trace-invariants, which are in one-to-one correspondence with combinatorial objects known as colored graphs. We first explain why trace-invariant evaluations can serve as labels of LU-orbits of multipartite pure states, how this strategy extends to random states, and how the effect of local operations (LO) can be analyzed through such data. We then focus on entanglement classification within an (infinite-dimensional) subspace of reference states, whose basic building blocks are GHZ states of various dimensions. We show that relatively simple subclasses of trace-invariants are sufficient to separate the LU-orbits of reference states, and enable a complete (resp. an incomplete) characterization of their relations in the LO (resp. LOCC) resource theory of entanglement. Finally, we investigate how a (still infinite) subclass of reference states of local dimension N can be efficiently distinguished at leading and subleading orders in an asymptotic large-N expansion (among themselves, or from Haar-random states). This analysis relies crucially on combinatorial quantities associated to colored graphs, some of which have already played instrumental roles in the recent literature on random tensors. Results of broader relevance are reported along the way.
