Topologically steerable ultra-flat electro-optic combs via non-Hermitian frequency lattices

Abstract

Electro-optic (EO) frequency combs convert microwave signals to the optical domain with deterministic repetition rates, enabling applications in optical telecommunications, microwave photonics, and LiDAR. However, generating flat EO combs has remained a long-standing challenge due to exponential decay of the spectral envelope inherent to bidirectional frequency coupling within conventional schemes. Here we reveal the inherent correspondence between flat-comb generation and the topological energy bands of non-Hermitian nonreciprocal frequency lattices, and experimentally realize ultra-flat combs with topologically controlled spectral flow. We derive the exact analytical condition for flat-comb generation, and find that it maps precisely onto the complex energy band, thereby establishing a direct connection between comb-envelope engineering and non-Hermitian topology. Experimentally, we observe an ultra-flat comb whose frequency evolution direction is governed by the topological winding and remains robust against detuning and phase fluctuations. This scheme can be further extended to long-range coupling and multi-lattice architectures, underscoring its versatility for flat dual- and multi-comb generation. Our work establishes a topologically steerable approach for achieving ultra-flat EO combs, paving the way for chip-scale spectral engineering via non-Hermitian topology.

Bounds on Propagation Constants in Dielectric Gratings

We establish analytical bounds on the normalized longitudinal propagation constants $β=k_z/k_0$ of modes in lossless dielectric diffraction gratings. If $ε_{\max}$ denotes the maximum relative permittivity, we show that regular modes ($β^2\in\mathbb{R}$) satisfy $β^2\leε_{\max}$ despite the lack of a scalar dispersion relation. We further show that the so-called ghost modes ($β^2\notin\mathbb{R}$), admitted by the non-Hermitian nature of the associated eigenproblem, satisfy $|\mathrm{Re}(β)|\le\sqrt{ε_{\max}}/2$. Both bounds are obtained directly from the Fourier-series formulation of the fully coupled vectorial eigenproblem.

Field Angular Momentum Transformation as a Resolution Criterion for Microsphere-assisted microscopy

This paper presents a sequential analysis of the resolving power of a microparticle as a function of its refractive index and size parameter. We demonstrate that the resolution of a microparticle for incoherent point sources is fundamentally determined by the number of excited Mie modes. Based on this mechanism, we propose a novel quantitative assessment framework that defines the spatial resolution limit via the ratio of the squared field angular momentum of the source to that of the total particle field (comprising the superposition of the source and scattered fields). The analytical results demonstrate good agreement with both numerical modeling and classical limits.

Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum, Cherenkov radiation and recoil of solitons with third-order dispersion underlying optical analogue horizons

Third-order dispersion turns the soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which underlies optical analogues of event horizons in fibers, into a weakly radiating solitary wave. We compute three of its properties without assuming a thermal emission law. First, the linearized (Bogoliubov-de Gennes) problem must be posed about the stationary state of the dispersive equation: linearizing about the integrable profile produces a complex quartet that is converged in grid and box, grows as the square root of the dispersion strength and is spurious. About the stationary state, on a periodic grid, the zero-mode sector consists of two Jordan blocks of size two and the spectrum is real at the operating point, including negative-energy box modes of the resonant branch. Second, we measure the steady Cherenkov emission of adiabatically prepared solitons from the flux of the radiation behind them, over eight decades. The radiation is phase-matched in the frame of the drifting soliton, and the first-order rate falls short of the measured one by factors of 29 to 45. Expressed through a scaled dispersion coefficient of the local soliton, the measured rate describes launched solitons of three amplitudes; with norm and momentum balance, and no further fitted parameter, it reproduces their recoil and the slow decay of their loss rate; at weak dispersion the loss of a launched soliton is the shedding of its launch mismatch. Third, a census of the asymptotic channels shows that long-wavelength upstream emission requires the chemical potential of the soliton, lowered by the comoving-frame Doppler shift of a drifting soliton, to lie inside the analysis band, which bounds the soliton amplitude. In a kinematic model of the flow the surface gravity has a closed form; the thermal relation and the entanglement built on it are imposed inputs of that model. The construction applies to Raman-free Kerr media.
