The Casimir energy in Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics with various perfect electric or magnetic boundary condition combinations

Abstract

We investigate the Casimir effect between two parallel wires in $(2+1)D$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) electrodynamics under different boundary conditions and separated by a distance $L$. Using a functional approach in which the boundary constraints are implemented by auxiliary fields localized on the wires, we integrate out the gauge field and derive an effective boundary theory whose functional determinant allows us to compute the Casimir energy. We consider perfect electric conductor (PEC), perfect magnetic conductor (PMC), and infinitely permeable (PMC2) boundary conditions. For two PEC wires, we recover the known MCS result and show that it coincides with the result obtained in the Abelian limit of the Curci-Ferrari (CF) model, implying that the Casimir effect in this case probes the photon mass $μ$ but not its origin. The same energy is obtained for two PMC2 wires. In sharp contrast, the Casimir energy vanishes identically for the covariant PMC condition in MCS theory, both for PMC-PMC and PEC-PMC. Since this cancellation does not occur in the CF model, it could provide a signature of the topological origin of the photon mass in $(2+1)D$. Finally, the PEC-PMC2 case yields a non-vanishing Casimir force and reproduces the known result for a perfectly conducting wire facing an infinitely permeable one. Interestingly enough, we show that for PEC-PMC2, the Casimir force in the MCS theory is smaller than the one of the CF model for any $L,μ>0$. Our results thus show that, depending on the boundary conditions, the Casimir effect could probe not only the photon mass but also reveal signatures of its origin.

Regular and Floquet bases for gauge and gravity theories: a non perturbative approach

This paper presents physical interpretations of the change of basis in Heun-type equations (Heun's and their confluences and reductions) from solutions decaying at two singular points to Floquet solutions. A crucial element in these connection relations is the phase acquired by Floquet solutions when transitioning between (ir)regular singularities. We exploit a novel `kink method' to compute the quantum momentum of the solutions as convergent series, explicitly at all orders. Consequently, by integrating the Floquet solutions term by term, the acquired phase can be explicitly derived as a series as well. Given that Heun equations and their confluences describe ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) background (corresponding to the quantization of Seiberg-Witten differentials) as well as black hole perturbation theory, tests and predictions can be established in both domains. Specifically, we perform a critical verification matching the acquired phase with the dual gauge period, $A_D$. On the gravity side, our explicit and systematic results agree with standard methods used to analyse the Teukolsky or Regge-Wheeler equations. This procedure provides an effective alternative to instanton and gravity computations. Ultimately, it marks the initial steps toward establishing a dictionary between integrability and gravitational quantities.

A structural criterion for asymptotic states in Supersymmetry

The occurrence of a field in a quantum field theory does not by itself establish the existence of a corresponding asymptotic particle. We formulate a structural criterion separating operator admissibility, dynamical spectral realization, and particlehood, using the exterior-polynomial classification of gravitino mass bilinears as a prototype. Particlehood is organized as an ordered filtration of geometry and state, effective algebra, dynamics, and spectral analysis, with the localization criterion $Λ[Ψ]$ defined by the presence of a physical spectral atom of non-zero weight. We obtain four results. First, conventional linearly realized global supercharges are obstructed on a positive-definite de Sitter Hilbert space when the full diagonal odd--odd bracket satisfies a positivity-reversal condition; the spacetime part is shown to be reversible in $\mathfrak{so}(4,1)$, while internal generators require a separate check. Second, invariant scalar de Sitter product decompositions remove the Minkowski additive two-particle threshold in principal-series channels. Third, a spectral-transfer decomposition shows how continuum weight in a mediator propagator can open absorptive support for an external field below the atomic mediator threshold. Fourth, in a reduced effective-operator basis, the fermionic vector derivative coupling is redundant under current-conservation assumptions, whereas the axial dimension-five coupling is physical unless excluded by parity or CP; under that symmetry hypothesis the residual fermionic derivative potential starts one operator dimension above the scalar one. Exact unbroken supersymmetry enforces multiplet rigidity of the atomic criterion.

Loop integrals in de Sitter spacetime: The parity-split IBP system and $\mathrm{d}\log$-form differential equations

We develop integration-by-parts (IBP) reduction and differential equations for massive loop integrals of cosmological correlators in de Sitter (dS) spacetime, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach. We identify a structural property of the dS IBP system: for an $n$-propagator family, it splits into $2^n$ closed subsystems classified by the parity of the propagator indices. We further formulate a Baikov representation for loop integrals in dS space and derive the corresponding dimensional recurrence relations. In flat spacetime, intersection theory shows that $\mathrm{d}\log$-form master integrands lead to $\mathrm{d}\log$-form differential equations. Motivated by fibration intersection theory, we conjecture that this construction extends to dS integrands involving Hankel functions. We verify this conjecture in the one-loop bubble family and determine the associated alphabet.
