Temperature evolution of spin dynamics in extended Kitaev models within an Abrikosov fermion theory beyond mean field

Abstract

The $S=1/2$ Kitaev model provides an exactly solvable setting in which spin fractionalization produces itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. In realistic Kitaev magnets, however, non-Kitaev interactions break integrability and make their finite-temperature dynamics difficult to calculate. We develop a finite-temperature parton mean-field theory based on the Abrikosov-fermion representation and incorporate the effects of exchange interactions through the random phase approximation to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor. For the pure Kitaev model, the method reproduces a strong, nearly dispersionless peak at a finite low energy together with a broad continuum at higher energies. It also reproduces the momentum dependence of the dynamical spin structure factor and its temperature evolution, including the downward shift of the low-energy spectral weight, in qualitative agreement with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Within the present theory, the contraction of the continuum is traced to the temperature-induced reduction of the bond amplitudes, which narrows the parton bands and compresses the two-parton phase space. For ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling, the energy of the low-energy peak is minimized at the $Γ$ point for a ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and maximized there for an antiferromagnetic interaction. In the ferromagnetic Kitaev-$Γ$ model, the static response develops a finite-momentum softening, indicating an instability toward the period-three magnetic order reported in numerical studies. For uniform-ferromagnetic states selected by a $[111]$ magnetic field, we find that a broad parton continuum coexists with magnonlike dispersive structures, producing spectral features consistent with a spinon-to-magnon crossover.

Exotic metallic phase in a heterotic Kondo lattice: violation of Luttinger's theorem and absence of Kondo gap

Fermi surface transformation accompanied by quantum phase transition is widely observed in correlated electron systems including heavy fermion materials and van der Waals quantum heterostructures. The unified Anderson lattice description for this phenomenon suggests that their interacting ground states in the case of electron half filling always destabilize the metallic phase in the strong Kondo-coupling regime. We examine this issue within the paramagnetic phase of a Kondo lattice system with a heterotic layered structure. In the weak Kondo-coupling regime, the system exhibits a fractional Dirac liquid involving the massless or massive Dirac fermions and a charge neutral spinon Fermi surface. In the strong Kondo-coupling regime, the spinons hybridize with the Dirac fermions resulting in an intermediate nearly-flat hybridizing band together with the conduction and valence heavy fermion bands, yielding a large electric Fermi surface. Absence of the Kondo gap between these bands is observed depending on the stacking configurations of the layered structure. In particular, the system remains metallic even at the exact half filling in this regime and Luttinger's theorem is violated across the critical point. Implications of these results on the van der Waals quantum heterostructures are briefly discussed.

Emergence of the electronic states driven by quantum charge fluctuations in electron doped cuprate superconductors

The origin of electron-boson interactions is central to understanding high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprates. While phonons and magnetic fluctuations are widely considered as candidates for mediating electron pairing, the role of charge fluctuations, one of the fundamental electronic degrees of freedom, remains unclear. Here, we investigate the electronic structure of the electron-doped cuprate using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and angle-resolved and resonant inverse photoemission spectroscopies, which reveal the electronic structure in the occupied and unoccupied states, respectively. From these spectroscopic experiments, we find emergent spectral features on both occupied and unoccupied states that are consistent with excitations driven by quantum charge fluctuations. The results obtained in this study offer direct experimental insight into charge fluctuations in cuprates, thereby paving the way towards clarifying the electronic structure of cuprates to understand the mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Liouvillian interpolation of the self-energy of cluster dynamical mean-field theories

Two widely-used non-local extensions of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), namely cellular DMFT (CDMFT) and the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA), both yield self-energies marred by having some unphysical properties: CDMFT yields real-space self-energies that are not translationally invariant, and DCA yields momentum-space self-energies with discontinuities in their momentum dependence. It is often desirable to remove these flaws by post-processing cluster DMFT results, using strategies called periodization for CDMFT and interpolation for DCA---for brevity, we refer to both cases as \textit{interpolation}. However, traditional interpolation approaches struggle to reliably capture intricate structures such as hole pockets in the hole-doped square-lattice Hubbard model. Further, these approaches interpolate frequency-dependent functions, which may lead to causality violations. Here, we propose \textit{Liouvillian interpolation}, a novel, intuitive, and robust scheme for interpolating cluster DMFT results. Our key idea is to interpolate frequency-\textit{independent} matrix elements of the single-particle irreducible part of the Liouvillian, obtained from a continued-fraction expansion of the cluster DMFT self-energy. We demonstrate that the ingredients of such an expansion possess a more local Fourier expansion than the functions involved in traditional interpolation schemes, and that Liouvillian interpolation conserves causality by construction. We illustrate our method for the one-dimensional Hubbard model using CDMFT, and for the two-dimensional Hubbard model using four-site CDMFT and four-patch DCA. For the latter, $\mathcal{L}$-interpolation can (depending on doping) yield Fermi and Luttinger arcs which together seem to form a closed surface.
