Non-Bloch band theory for finite banded non-Hermitian Toeplitz matrices

Abstract

Non-Bloch band theory recovers the open-boundary spectrum of a non-Hermitian chain from its Bloch Hamiltonian evaluated along the generalised Brillouin zone rather than the unit circle. We develop its finite-size counterpart for banded Toeplitz matrices with real open-boundary spectrum. Reality of the spectrum forces the generalised Brillouin zone to be parametrised by an analytic polar curve, so the known sufficient condition for a real spectrum is also necessary under some mild non-degeneracy conditions. At finite size $n$, the eigenvalues of the original and the symmetrised Bloch Hamiltonians are given by samples at $n$ quantised momenta from the same limiting band, although separated by a phase mismatch of order $1/n$ which we obtain in closed form. Iterating this correction $K$ times yields a quantisation rule on the generalised Brillouin zone reproducing the finite spectrum with an error $\mathcal{O}(n^{-K-1})$ for any fixed $K$. At finite size, the generalised Brillouin zone itself is unchanged and only its parametrisation depends on $n$.

Quantitative spectral stability and sharp Fourier estimates for periodic CMV matrices with decaying perturbations

We study half-line CMV matrices whose Verblunsky coefficients are decaying perturbations of periodic sequences. We quantify the stability of fine properties of the absolutely continuous spectral measure under such perturbations. More precisely, we establish Hölder continuity of the perturbed spectral measure and derive sharp time-averaged Fourier estimates governing the associated quantum dynamics. These results remain valid up to the edges of the absolutely continuous spectrum. Since the spectral measure of a half-line CMV matrix is precisely the orthogonality measure for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC), our results also yield new statements for OPUC whose Verblunsky coefficients are decaying perturbations of periodic sequences.

On the inequality $μ_3 < λ_1$ for the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator

In 1952, Pólya proved the inequality $μ_2 < λ_1$ for the eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann problems in domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 2$. We show that $μ_3 < λ_1$ if $d\ge 3$. In the two-dimensional case, in 2025, Rohleder proved that $μ_3 < λ_1$ for simply connected domains. We prove that this inequality holds also true for double connected domains symmetric with respect to the origin.

Sums of Dirichlet eigenvalues in proximity of the disk and the ball

We derive second order perturbation expansions of volume-normalized sums of the first $n$ Dirichlet eigenvalues for near-circular and near-spherical domains. The disk (resp. ball) is only a critical shape when $n$ is the last index of an eigenvalue cluster, and in dimension two and three our expansions yield a finitely checkable criterion deciding whether the disk or ball is a weak local minimizer or a saddle point. In two dimensions, this allows us to show that there is an infinite number of cases in which the disk is a saddle point for finite eigenvalue sums.
