Geometry-Encoded Hidden Orientational Memory
Abstract
Materials usually remember their past through dissipative changes of structure or through a net order. Simulations of caged colloidal ellipsoids at a fluid interface reveal a purely orientational memory. The particles stay in place, the layer has no net alignment, and a pattern written by a field is retained by capillary interactions between neighbors. It lasts hundreds of times longer than a particle takes to reorient, while every particle keeps rotating. The layer also remembers sequence: when two strong fields act one after the other on the same particles, it records which came last.
