Hidden Staggered Superconducting Order in V2Se2O-Family Altermagnets

Abstract

$η$ pairing describes a staggered superconducting condensate whose order parameter changes sign between neighboring unit cells while maintaining a uniform magnitude. Nearly four decades after its theoretical proposal by C. N. Yang, a material platform for stabilizing $η$ pairing has remained elusive. Here, we reveal that altermagnetism, despite being pair breaking for conventional BCS pairing, naturally favors $η$-like pairing in V$_2$Se$_2$O-family altermagnets. Their valley-contrasting spin structure gives rise to oppositely spin-polarized, symmetry-related valleys centered at $X=(π,0)$ and $Y=(0,π)$, which form spin-singlet pairing partners separated by the commensurate momentum $\mathbf Q=(π,π)$, thereby favoring an $η$-like condensate. Self-consistent calculations demonstrate that the resulting $η$-like state remains robust over broad variations of chemical potential, hopping parameters, and Fermi-surface topology. To detect this hidden staggered order, we propose a phase-sensitive Josephson measurement with a uniform superconductor, where destructive interference suppresses single-Cooper-pair tunneling while preserving two-Cooper-pair processes. This constitutes a charge-$4e$-like Josephson response despite a bulk condensate composed of charge-$2e$ Cooper pairs, providing a direct phase-sensitive signature of the otherwise elusive $η$-like condensate in V$_2$Se$_2$O-family altermagnets.

Fully Gapped Superconductivity in the Nonsymmorphic Centrosymmetric Superconductor In2Bi

The nature of superconductivity in nonsymmorphic In2Bi remains an open question, with ongoing debate over whether it exhibits conventional (BCS-like) or unconventional superconductivity. Here we report the physical characteristics and superconducting properties of polycrystalline In2Bi. Measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetization, penetration depth, and specific heat demonstrate the superconducting transition temperature about 6 K, with a sharp transition in resistivity (Delta_Tc = 0.1 K) and RRR = 57.32, reflecting the high quality of the sample. The upper critical field Hc2(0) obtained from resistivity and magnetization measurements are in good agreement with each other and are smaller than the Pauli limit, suggesting orbital limited mechanism. The coherence length = 35.43 nm, penetration depth = 101.9 nm and electron-phonon coupling constant = 1.05 suggest strongly coupled type-II superconductivity. For T<Tc, Delta_lambda(T) is best described by an s-wave BCS model and does not have any power law dependency with T, which is expected for a nodeless superconducting order parameter. The superfluid density reveals a fully gapped superconductivity with a gap of 2Delta_0/kBTc = 4.02. In the superconducting state, the electronic specific heat is best described by an s-wave BCS model with a gap of 2Delta_0/kBTc = 4.05. All these results from the present study indicate that In2Bi is a typical type-II,BCS-like, strongly coupled, and fully gapped superconductor in the dirty limit.

From Atomistic Impurity Landscapes to Two-Level-System Distributions and Microwave Loss: Hydrogen-Induced Losses in Nb$_2$O$_{5-δ}$ and Ta$_2$O$_{5-δ}$

We introduce a first-principles-guided framework for predicting statistical TLS distributions from mobile impurities in disordered materials. Machine-learned interatomic potentials, with DFT and minimum-action-path validation, connect impurity landscapes to tunnel-splitting and asymmetry distributions, TLS densities, and dielectric loss. Applied to amorphous Nb$_2$O$_{5-δ}$ and Ta$_2$O$_{5-δ}$, the framework implicates interstitial hydrogen as a source of microwave loss. Loss tangents match Nb-pentoxide measurements at inferred H concentrations, while weaker H uptake in Ta reproduces the Nb/Ta TLS contrast.

Superconductivity in a Bulk Moire Superlattice Material

Moire materials provide a versatile platform realizing emergent electronic states arising from enhanced correlation due to flat bands. A variety of phenomena including superconductivity, low dimensional ferromagnetism, Mott insulating phase, and topological phenomena have been reported in such systems. To date, moire phenomena have been predominantly explored in artificially assembled low dimensional van der Waals structures, where relative twist and lattice alignment are controlled during device fabrication. Recently, intrinsically grown bulk moire crystals have emerged as a complementary materials platform, in which lattice mismatch between constituent layers generates a coherent moire superlattice throughout the bulk crystal. Here, we report the evidence of bulk superconductivity in single crystals of a recently reported bulk Moire material [Sr6TaS8]1+x[TaS2]8 at ambient pressure. The material exhibits a bulk superconducting transition at Tc = 2.5 K, evidenced consistently by electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements on single crystals. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and atomic resolution electron microscopy establishes the composite, incommensurate crystal structure and scanning tunnelling microscopy reveals a long-wavelength surface modulation due to the incommensurate structure. The observation of bulk superconductivity establishes superconductivity as an emergent phase in this intrinsically synthesized moire material and highlights bulk moire crystals as a promising platform for investigating correlated quantum phenomena beyond artificially assembled two-dimensional structures.
