Generalization of Navascués' $α$-fractal operator on lifted Sierpiński gasket

Abstract

The primary objective of the present article is to extend Navascués' class of $α$-fractal interpolation functions ($α$-FIFs) from a Euclidean domain to a non-Euclidean domain. Precisely, we consider the lifted Sierpiński gasket $\big(\widetilde{SG}\big)$, which is a subset of the first Heisenberg group equipped with a \textit{non-Euclidean metric} (popularly known as the Heisenberg metric), and demonstrate the existence of the class of $α$-FIFs in the continuous space on $\widetilde{SG}$. Subsequently, we derive certain conditions on the parameters so that the same class lies in the Hölder space on $\widetilde{SG}$. Next, we extend the theory of Navascués' $α$-fractal operator from the Euclidean space to the Heisenberg space, and we also report several properties of the same operator. Additionally, we discuss certain dimensional results of the graphs of the functions with respect to the Heisenberg metric besides the Euclidean metric. We also cover some of the dimensional preserving and the set-valued results corresponding to the dimension of the graphs of the functions.

Finiteness of planar central configurations of five bodies for all positive masses: On Smale's sixth problem

We prove that for every choice of five positive masses the planar five-body problem has only finitely many central configurations up to rotation, translation and scaling. This answers Smale's sixth problem for five bodies. Albouy and Kaloshin proved the statement for all masses outside a closed algebraic subset of codimension two of the mass space. We keep their classification of singular sequences and replace the construction of the exceptional set by a direct exclusion: we use finite boundary charts for seven of the eight diagrams that can carry an unbounded four-product, and an exhaustive order census for Diagram 5. We derive the necessary mass conditions where needed and show that no germ with an unbounded four-product lies on a curve of normalized central configurations through a positive configuration. Five diagrams are excluded for all complex germs, two on curves through real configurations, and one on curves through positive configurations. Parts of the argument are computer-assisted: exact algebra, interval arithmetic and exact linear programming.

Marchal-type lemmas for the restricted $(N+1)$-body problem with their applications

The direct methods of calculus of variations have had a great success in the classical Newtonian $N$-body problem in this century. First in finding periodic solutions and more recently in the existence of parabolic, hyperbolic and hyperbolic-parabolic solutions. The foundation of many of these results is Marchal's lemma, which guarantee's fixed-end local minimizers are collision-free and hence classical solutions of the $N$-body problem. Meanwhile almost no result is available in the restricted problem through the direct methods of calculus of variations, mainly due to the lack of a Marchal-type lemma. In this paper such a lemma and its variation will be obtained for the restricted problem. We then apply them to the restricted problem to study unbounded (hyperbolic, parabolic, bi-hyperbolic and bi-parabolic) solutions, and bounded (periodic and quasi-periodic) solutions. We emphasize that the extension to the restricted case does not follow from the standard arguement for the unrestricted case.

Continuity of biaccessibility dimension for polynomials

For a polynomial $f$ of degree $d\geq 2$, its biaccessible set $B(f)$ consists of angles whose external rays are smooth and land at a point receiving at least two smooth external rays. We prove that the function $f\mapsto {\rm dim}_H(B(f))$ is continuous on the entire space of degree-$d$ polynomials. Therefore $(\log d){\rm dim}_H (B(f))$ gives a continuous extension of classical core entropy from the postcritically finite case to all polynomials of degree $d$.
