Renormalization Group Domain Walls from Phantom Symmetries

Abstract

We develop a systematic construction of renormalization group (RG) domain walls between two-dimensional rational conformal field theories. Using phantom currents, we consider an auxiliary chiral extension linked to the folded ultraviolet--infrared theory by a topological interface. The construction of RG walls then reduces to identifying suitable automorphism-twisted Cardy states in the auxiliary theory. We find two such types of automorphisms: outer automorphisms exchanging identical current algebra factors, as in Gaiotto's construction, and continuous inner automorphisms generated by the zero modes of spin-one phantom currents. In the latter case, the RG domain walls generically admit a continuous defect conformal manifold. We further show that, when an RG flow can be orbifolded to another one, the orbifold may lift defect conformal moduli of the RG brane constructed using inner automorphisms. The two types of RG branes can then be mapped to each other via a topological interface defined by the orbifold. We demonstrate the two types of RG brane construction via various examples of flows between non-unitary minimal models, from parafermions to minimal models, and between generalized parafermions. Many physical observables of the RG walls are computed non-perturbatively, including boundary entropies and spectra, and UV--IR operator mixings. We also find interesting nontrivial boundary monodromy: a closed cycle in the defect conformal moduli space can carry an RG domain wall into other distinct non-trivial conformal interfaces.

Holographic entanglement entropy and c-functions in conformal and confining backgrounds

In this work we investigate holographic spacelike and timelike entanglement entropy using the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, for slab-shaped and ball-shaped entangling regions. We work with an infinite family of 10-dimensional Type IIB supergravity solutions, which are gravity duals to an infinite set of linear quiver theories, with the backgrounds defined using the electrostatic potential formalism for brane configurations. The dual theories are 4-dimensional confining theories at low energy, but decompactify and flow to 5-dimensional SCFTs in the UV. We find that the entanglement entropy exhibits phase transition behaviour, and we use our results to investigate proposed c-functions constructed from the entanglement entropy. Comparing with the flow central charge, another proposed c-function, we find that each displays good behaviour, and reflects both UV and IR features of the dual theory.

Fluid dynamics as intersection problem

The main result of the paper is a construction of an infinite-dimensional symplectic manifold, associated with spacetime, its coisotropic submanifold defined as the zero locus of a moment map, and a family of Lagrangian submanifolds determined by the equation of state and the spacetime metric, such that their intersection is precisely the covariant Lichnerowicz--Carter system for a relativistic perfect fluid. On this basis, we clarify the notion of canonical velocity and hydrodynamic invariants, such as the asymptotic Hopf invariant and the Ertel invariant, and obtain a generalization of Kelvin's circulation theorem. We also clarify the relation between the canonical velocity, the four-velocity, and other choices of frames. We point out a five-dimensional origin of the formalism underlying the covariant formulation of hydrodynamics. Our formalism extends naturally to fluids with additional degrees of freedom, including multi-component fluids, charged fluids, and superfluids, and incorporates the chiral anomaly and Onsager quantization. It also suggests a direction of research connecting hydrodynamics to Poisson sigma models and topological field theories. Furthermore, we argue that a similar approach applies to the theory of self-dual fields, such as chiral bosons in 1+1 dimensions, tensor fields of (2,0) theory in 1+5 dimensions, and the 4-form field of type-IIB supergravity in 1+9 dimensions.

IR behaviour of one-loop complex $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$ saddles

Gravitational path-integral over $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$ complex metrics with fluctuations is studied in 4D for Einstein-Hilbert gravity in Lorentzian signature, with the aim to investigate the IR behaviour of complex saddles for various boundary choices. General covariance doesn't allow arbitrary boundary choices for the background and fluctuations. In the ADM-decomposition, while imposing ``no-boundary'' condition at the initial boundary, two scenarios are considered for the final boundary: Dirichlet and fixed extrinsic curvature. The universe undergoes a transition from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian phase in either scenario, where the dominant saddle in Euclidean phase corresponds to a Euclidean metric, while the Lorentzian phase has two dominant complex saddles that superimpose. One-loop lapse action is computed using Hurwitz-Zeta regularization. UV-divergences canceled by suitable counterterms lead to a renormalized lapse action. One-loop Hartle-Hawking wave-function is computed using the Picard-Lefschetz (PL) and WKB methods, where the contributions from the metric fluctuations show secularly growing infrared divergences as the Universe expands. This is compared with the situation in Lorentzian dS, corresponding to a Universe transitioning from an initial state of vanishing conjugate momenta to a final state of fixed extrinsic curvature. The PL method alone is not sufficient to overcome the technical hurdles in the one-loop computation, which needs to be supplemented by an $iε$-prescription, achieved via slight complexification of the cosmological constant $Λ$. The renormalized one-loop dS wavefunction is seen to have qualitatively the same leading IR behaviour as the no-boundary wavefunction, though the coefficients are seen to be sensitive to the UV boundary choices. Interestingly, for all boundary choices considered, the saddles remain KSW-allowed.
