The semiring of spectral duality skeletons: cancellation, characters and factorization

Abstract

Weighted dual skeletons are the combinatorial core of spectral duality structures. Their isomorphism classes, under Cartesian product and disjoint union, form a semiring graded by the degree. We identify it completely: a class is determined by its degree, a symmetric element of the group semiring N_0[R] and its number of fixed points. Equivalently, skeletons of a given degree are finite C_2-sets over the C_2-monoid (R,+), these data are their marks, and the semiring is an infinite-monoid analogue of a crossed Burnside semiring. The multiplicative monoid is not cancellative, the only obstruction being that multiplication by a skeleton without fixed points forgets the fixed points; accordingly, the Grothendieck ring has explicit zero divisors. A continuous family of semiring characters, with the degree and the number of fixed points, is a complete invariant, and for commensurable ratios the multiplicative Grothendieck group is described by Pólya's theorem. The main subject is factorization. The reduced monoid is atomic with bounded lengths, but factorization is not unique, the elasticity is infinite, and even the divisor-closed submonoid with one fixed point is not half-factorial. Without fixed points, every reducible skeleton splits off a single orbit, which gives a criterion by centers, exactly when the number of orbits is 8, 16, a prime or twice a prime. Irreducibility is generic in almost every type. Progression skeletons factor according to mixed-radix number systems, with all factorizations of equal length. Finally, orbit counting gives the dimension of the separatrix and the response rank of products.

Linear algebra over T-pairs

This is part of an ongoing project to find a general algebraic framework for semiring theory. The structure theory of semirings is quite challenging, largely because of the lack of negation, and such basic properties such as unique factorization of polynomials, multiplicativity of determinants, and the characteristic polynomial of a matrix, all fail. (In fact in the max-plus algebra, the sum of two nonzero elements is never zero!) Consequently 0 is replaced by a distinguished T-submodule $ A_0$ of $ A,$ and $( A, A_0)$ is called a ``pair.'' This paper treats linear algebra over a (not necessarily distributive) semiring pair, with a range of applications to tropical algebra as well as related areas such as hyperrings and fuzzy rings. We turn to matrices and the question of whether the row rank, column rank, and submatrix rank of a matrix are equal. The submatrix rank is less than or equal to the row rank and the column rank in many cases, including ``metatangible pairs'' with unique negation, but there is a counterexample to equality, discovered some time ago by the second author, which we provide in a more general setting (``pairs of the second kind'') that includes the hyperfield of signs. We do find situations when equality holds, encompassing results by Akian, Gaubert, Guterman, Izhakian, Knebusch, and Rowen, including versions of Cramer's rule. We pay special attention to the question of Baker and Zhang whether $n+1$ vectors of length $n$ need be dependent. At the conclusion of the main part, we consider surpassing relations, which permit us to tighten our results. The categorical setting is given in the appendix.

A monoid-theoretical approach to infinite direct-sum decompositions of modules

Let $\mathcal C$ be a class of modules over a ring $R$, closed under direct sums over index sets of cardinality $κ$ and isomorphisms, and such that the isomorphism classes form a set. The monoid of modules $V(\mathcal C)$ encodes the behavior of finite direct-sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C$. We endow $V(\mathcal C)$ with an additional operation reflecting $κ$-indexed direct sums, and study the resulting $κ$-monoid $V^κ(\mathcal C)$. The braiding-property and an equivalent universal property, allow us to show: if every module in $\mathcal C$ is a direct sum of at most $κ$ many modules generated by strictly fewer than $λ$ many elements, then all relations on $V^κ(\mathcal C)$ are induced by relations between direct sums indexed by sets of cardinality strictly less than $λ$. A theorem of Kaplansky states that every projective module is a direct sum of countably generated modules. We show that also all relations between infinite direct sums of projective modules are induced from those between countable direct sums of countably generated projective modules. If every projective module over a ring $R$ is a direct sum of finitely generated projective modules, then the monoid of finitely generated projective modules $V(R)$ completely determines the $κ$-monoid $V^κ(R)$. Together with the realization result of Bergman and Dicks, this characterizes the $κ$-monoids appearing as $V^κ(R)$ for a hereditary ring. In general, the $\aleph_0$-monoid $V^{\aleph_0}(R)$ fully determines $V^κ(R)$. Herbera and Příhoda's characterization of monoids of countably generated projective modules $V^*(R)$ over semilocal noetherian rings, yields a characterization of $V^κ(R)$ for these rings. We also characterize two-generated $\aleph_0$-monoids that appear as $V^{\aleph_0}(R)$ for hereditary rings $R$.

Classical Yang-Baxter equations and Nijenhuis operators for Lie algebras

In this paper the conditions that when a Lie algebra is Nijenhuis are investigated. Furthermore all the Nijenhuis operators on $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ under the standard Cartan-Weyl basis are given. On the other hand, the relations between the classical Yang-Baxter equation and Nijenhuis operators $N$ on a Lie algebra and $P$ on a Lie coalgebra are derived by means of the bialgebraic theory for Nijenhuis Lie algebras.
