Resonance interaction of vector breathers and exotic dynamics in the coupled Hirota equation

Abstract

This work presents a systematic theoretical investigation of vector breathers and their nonlinear interactions in the coupled Hirota equation. This model describes the simultaneous propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in optical fibers and contains a key parameter that characterizes the strength of higher-order linear and nonlinear effects, such as third-order dispersion and self-steepening. For the model, we focus on the focusing-focusing case. On a nonzero plane-wave background, we derive explicit expressions for multi-breather solutions of the coupled Hirota equation by the dressing method. For the single-breather solution, by choosing special constant vectors, the vector breathers can be classified into three fundamental types: Type I, Type II, and Type III. We then analyze their characteristic parameters, including spatial localization and group velocity, as well as important special cases such as the Kuznetsov-Ma breathers, Peregrine soliton, and Akhmediev type breathers etc. Through the above analysis, we find that the higher-order effect parameter only modifies the propagation velocity and oscillation period of the breathers, while the resonance conditions remain satisfied: when the wave numbers and frequencies match, inelastic resonant interactions can occur between Type I and Type II breathers, manifesting either as a fusion process (I + II \rightarrow II) or the reverse decay process (III \rightarrow I + II). Furthermore, we present the explicit expression for the two breather solutions of the equation and analyze its rich interaction scenarios, including two breather resonances and elastic collisions, and we point out that the special case of resonance corresponds to the limiting case of merging eigenvalues. Finally, we carry out numerical simulations to verify the accuracy of the obtained solutions.

Minimum nonlinearity for pattern-forming Turing instability in a mathematical autocatalytic model

Pattern formation is ubiquitous in nature and the mechanism widely-accepted to underlay them is based on the Turing instability, predicted by Alan Turing decades ago. This is a non-trivial mechanism that involves nonlinear interaction terms between the different species involved and transport mechanisms. We present here a mathematical analysis aiming to explore the mathematical constraints that a reaction-diffusion dynamical model should comply in order to exhibit a Turing instability. The main conclusion limits the existence of this instability to nonlinearity degrees larger or equal to three.

Power-Logistic Shocks in a Lossy Nonlinear Transmission Line

We consider a lossy transmission line with a nonlinear voltage--charge relation. In the framework of the inverse-design method, starting from a prescribed monotonic front profile, we determine exactly the voltage--charge relation in the transmission line where the front propagates and the squared local sound speed. The latter plays an important role in our analysis, determining the admissibility conditions for the front. We specifically consider fronts with a power-logistic profile and its special case, the hyperbolic-tangent profile. All physically admissible fronts of this form are shocks rather than kinks. For such shocks, the voltage--charge relation and the squared local sound speed--charge relation are expressed in terms of the lower incomplete beta function. We formulate the modified inverse-design method to calculate the profile of a shock propagating in the transmission line with a prescribed voltage--charge relation. We examine the local spectral properties of the front propagating in the transmission line in terms of the original partial differential equations and show that the short-wavelength perturbation modes are damped. The kink--shock distinction obtained from the mechanical analogy is independently confirmed through the long-wavelength characteristic analysis.

Diffusion Limited Aggregation in Ants Biting off Wall Paint

Diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) is a well studied phenomenon in which diffusing particles cumulatively aggregate on a starting fixed seed point, forming a pattern which is fractal in structure. Here we report an interesting DLA process arising from ants biting off wall paint. The structures arising from this long process are analyzed and found to have a fractional dimension between 1 and 2. The DLA formations observed in nature are mostly a result of various kinds of inanimate or micro-biological particles diffusing and aggregating. What makes the present observation interesting is that it involves live insects which may be guided by sight, smell etc. A simple theoretical model of the process is simulated, and the results agree well with the experimental observations.
