LCM Splittings in GCD Domains

Abstract

In a GCD ring $R$, every pair of elements $a,b\in R$ admits a greatest common divisor $\text{gcd}(a,b)$ and a least common multiple $\text{lcm}(a,b)$. Motivated by a question on Mathematics Stack Exchange by Ash Seifert~\cite{Sei22}, I introduce the notion of an lcm splitting $c,d\in R$ for $a,b$ satisfying $cd\sim\text{lcm}(a,b), c\mid a, d\mid b, \text{gcd}(c,d)\sim1$. I show that adequate Bézout domains always admit lcm splittings, give examples of Bézout domains in which some pair has no lcm splitting, and make further remarks on this seemingly new property.

On an Instance of the Small Cohen-Macaulay Conjecture II

We show that any $d$-dimensional local ring $A$ with a dualizing complex, $\mathrm{depth} A=d-1$, and cyclic deficiency module $K^{d-1}(A)$ admits a maximal Cohen--Macaulay module. It is constructed as the unique nonzero cohomology module of the cone of the derived morphism induced by a surjection $A\to K^{d-1}(A)$. This gives new cases of the small Cohen--Macaulay conjecture. When $A$ is quasi-Gorenstein, this module is identified with the first syzygy of the canonical module $ω_{A/xA}$, for any $x\in\operatorname{ann}_A K^{d-1}(A)$ that is regular on $A$. This recovers a theorem of Tavanfar and Shimomoto for quasi-Gorenstein deformations of a 3-dimensional quasi-Gorenstein local ring $A$ with $K^2(A)\cong k$. We also construct examples of section rings satisfying the hypotheses of our theorem.

Combinatorial bounds for the v-number of binomial edge ideals

We study the local $\mathrm v$-numbers of binomial edge ideals from a combinatorial perspective. For each minimal prime $P_{\mathcal S}$ of $J_G$, indexed by a cutset $\mathcal S$ of $G$, we consider two combinatorial invariants, $\mathrm v^-_{\mathcal S}(G)$ and $\mathrm v^+_{\mathcal S}(G)$, defined in terms of transversals of suitable hypergraphs, and show that the local $\mathrm v$-number $\mathrm v_{P_{\mathcal S}}(J_G)$ satisfies $\mathrm v^-_{\mathcal S}(G)\leq \mathrm v_{P_{\mathcal S}}(J_G)\leq \mathrm v^+_{\mathcal S}(G)$. Under a suitable hypothesis on the connected components, we provide explicit graph-theoretic descriptions of these invariants and analyze when they coincide, giving a combinatorial way to determine the local $\mathrm v$-numbers. As an application, we derive a sufficient condition for this coincidence, which applies to a broad class of graphs. Furthermore, we identify a constant that controls the gap between $\mathrm v^-_{\mathcal S}(G)$ and $\mathrm v^+_{\mathcal S}(G)$, thereby showing that the local $\mathrm{v}$-number lies within a bounded interval. Applications to cycles and trees illustrate both the equality criterion and the resulting bounds.

Regularity, depth and Serre depth of symbolic powers of complementary edge ideals

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and let $I_c(G)$ denote its complementary edge ideal. In this paper, we study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, the depth and Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ of the symbolic powers of $I_c(G)$. We derive explicit formulas for $\operatorname{reg} I_c(G)^{(k)}$ and $\operatorname{reg} I_c(G)^{(k)}/I_c(G)^k$ for every $k\geq1$, in terms of the number and the sizes of the connected components of $G$. As applications, we determine their asymptotic behavior, and completely characterize the symbolic powers of complementary edge ideals having linear resolutions. We then investigate the symbolic depth function $k\mapsto\operatorname{depth} S/I_c(G)^{(k)}$. We determine explicitly its values for $k=2,3,4$, and establish bounds for the asymptotic depth. More generally, for an arbitrary squarefree monomial ideal $I$, we compare the local cohomology modules of $S/I^{(k)}$ for different symbolic powers, and derive corresponding inequalities for the depth and the Serre depth. Applying this to complementary edge ideals, we obtain $\operatorname{depth} S/I_{c}(G)^{(t)}\geq\operatorname{depth} S/I_{c}(G)^{(k)}$ for $k\geq 2t-1$, despite the fact that the symbolic depth function need not be non-increasing. Finally, we characterize complementary edge ideals satisfying Serre's condition $(S_r)$, and determine the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ of all symbolic powers of complementary edge ideals. In particular, we obtain combinatorial characterizations of Serre's condition $(S_{2})$ and of the Cohen-Macaulayness of $S/I_{c}(G)^{(k)}$ for every $k\geq 1$.
