An Atiyah-Segal homomorphism for approximate representations of infinite groups, and almost multiplicative ucp maps

Abstract

The Atiyah-Segal homomorphism relates the representation ring of a finite group to the $K$-theory ring of its classifying space. We develop a version of this for infinite groups, but based on a ring of approximate representations rather than representations. We then use known results on the Baum-Connes conjecture to show that our homomorphism is an isomorphism for many groups: this includes all torsion-free amenable groups, and all torsion-free fundamental groups of compact manifolds of dimension at most three. The main motivation is the desire to understand approximate representations using topological tools: as a sample application we give some examples of torsion phenomena in approximate representation theory. The methods of proof are $C^*$-algebraic: the key idea is to relate our Atiyah-Segal type homomorphism to Kasparov's coassembly map. The main step realizes (Hausdorffized) $KK$-theory as approximately multiplicative ucp maps modulo stable approximate unitary equivalence for appropriate $C^*$-algebras. This is in the spirit of the stable uniqueness theorems of Dadarlat-Eilers and Lin, and may be of purely $C^*$-algebraic interest.

Equivariant localizing motives and multiplicative norms on algebraic K-theory

We construct multiplicative norms on equivariant nonconnective algebraic $K$-theory for finite groups $G$. We also construct a genuine equivariant version of THH equipped with a Dennis trace map from K-theory compatible with the multiplicative norms. To do so, we follow the general strategy of Blumberg-Gepner-Tabuada in the nonequivariant case by generalizing their category of localizing motives to the genuine equivariant context, building upon the theory of perfect $G$-stable categories of the first-named author. Crucially, we proceed using the recent perspective on noncommutative motives by the second-named author with Sosnilo and Winges which allows us to deal with non-exact functors on this category of motives. Together with an isotropy separation argument for equivariant cubes, we prove our main theorem that norms of stable categories preserve equivariant motivic equivalences. As an immediate consequence, we obtain a unique equivariant multiplicative refinement of nonconnective algebraic $K$-theory. From these constructions and results, we draw several applications, namely: (1) that the endofunctor of (equivariant) tensor powers on ordinary perfect stable categories preserve motivic equivalences; (2) that the multiplicative norms also preserve the additive motivic equivalences, thus yielding a motivic refinement of a result of Elmanto-Haugseng and Cnossen-Haugseng-Lenz-Linskens that connective algebraic K-theory admits multiplicative norms; (3) we construct a genuine equivariant version of topological Hochschild homology equipped with a Dennis trace map that is compatible with multiplicative norms; and (4) we prove that every genuine $G$-spectrum is the K-theory of a perfect $G$-stable category.

The spectrum of units of algebraic $K$-theory

It is well known that the $[0,1]$ and $[0,2]$ Postnikov truncations of the units of the topological $K$-theories $\glone \KO$ and $\glone \KU$, respectively, are split, and that the splitting is provided by the ($\Z/2$-graded) line bundles. In this paper we give a similar splitting for the $[0,1]$-truncation of the units of algebraic $K$-theory, considered as a sheaf on affine schemes. A crucial step is to produce the splitting for $\glone K(\Z)$. Along the way we also give a complete calculation of the connective spectrum of strict units of $K(\Z)$ and $K(\F_\ell)$ for a prime $\ell$. Finally, we show that the units of algebraic $K$-theory do not split as a presheaf. In fact we show they do not even split pointwise.

Generalized Thom Spectra, Conjugate Stacks, and truncated Brown-Peterson Spectra

We propose a of definition conjugate stack for a class of suitable $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}$-algebras that includes the truncated Brown-Peterson spectra $\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle$ for all heights $n$. Then we calculate part of $\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle^{\mathrm{conj}}$ as a quotient stack in terms of Witt vectors. To perform this computation we study generalized Thom spectra and their relative Topological Hochschild Homology. We exhibit the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{F}_2$ as a $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}$-Thom spectrum, the $p$-local Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}/p^n$ (except for $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}/4$) and $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$ as $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{MU}_{(p)}$-Thom spectra, and the connective complex K-theory spectrum $ku$ as $\mathbb{E}_1$-$\mathrm{MU}$-Thom spectra. We accompany these ``go" results with ``no-go" results that show these ``go" results do not admit $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-refinements.
