Model Theory and Algorithms for One-Relator Groups

Abstract

We study the elementary theories and algorithmic properties of one-relator groups. We give a first-order sentence characterizing Baumslag-Solitar-freeness in this class. For fixed $|m|>1$, we regularly interpret $\BS(1,m)$ as a definable subgroup in every one-relator group containing it. We uniformly, regularly and injectively interpret integer arithmetic in countable groups of cohomological dimension at most two. We obtain one uniform interpretation for all one-relator groups containing a non-unimodular Baumslag--Solitar subgroup. Every fixed finitely presented group is regularly interpretable in these groups, and their elementary theories are undecidable. We also describe the GBS overgroups of a non-unimodular Baumslag--Solitar subgroup. For the unimodular groups we construct finite-index direct products of free groups and $\Z$, and reduce the elementary theory of $\BS(k,k)$ to that of a free group with a named periodic automorphism. Using the recent Open AI result that BS-free one-relator groups are hyperbolic we obtain a terminating algorithm recognizing this class and obtain consequences. From the virtual compact specialness result of another Open AI paper, we obtain an effective construction of virtual free-by-cyclic presentations for hyperbolic one-relator groups, the free kernel may have infinite rank. For classes of torsion-free one-relator groups in which CSA implies toral relative hyperbolicity, we give a uniform algorithm deciding CSA and, in the affirmative case, the existence of a subgroup isomorphic to $\Z^2$.

Unsolved Problems in Group Theory. The Kourovka Notebook

This is a collection of open problems in group theory proposed by hundreds of mathematicians from all over the world. It has been published every 2--4 years since 1965. This is the 21st edition, which contains 150 new problems and a number of comments on problems from the previous editions. Problems with $\boldsymbol{\displaystyle{\sharp }}$ have AI-proposed solutions that are not yet confirmed by mathematicians and should be regarded as unsolved. Anyone interested is invited to look into such an AI solution and either confirm it or refute. On algebraic and arithmetic properties of monoids of product-$K$ sequences

Let $G$ be a group and $K$ be a normal subgroup of $G$. A sequence over $G$ is a finite collection of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed, and the order is disregarded. A product-$K$ sequence is a sequence whose terms can be ordered such that their product in $G$ belongs to $K$. The set $\mathcal B_K (G)$ of all product-$K$ sequences over $G$ forms a monoid, called the monoid of product-$K$ sequences, under the operation of sequence concatenation. In this paper, we investigate the algebraic and arithmetic properties of the monoid $\mathcal B_K (G)$. Among our main results, we provide precise characterizations of when $\mathcal B_K (G)$ satisfies key properties, namely being (transfer) Krull, a (seminormal) C-monoid, or (half-)factorial. After that, we study the Isomorphism Problem for monoids of product-$K$ sequences. Our results generalize existing frameworks, making them applicable to both the classical abelian and the more recently developed non-abelian settings.

Near full groups of bounded type, II

We study when a finitely generated group of bounded type contains the AF alternating group of the tail groupoid of its defining Bratteli diagram. This containment is an input to the full group completion theorem of Part I. We give sufficient conditions for this containment, in which selectors separate inherited diagonal actions, and an exact criterion for finite regular coverings. In the covering case, the intersection with the AF alternating group is the centralizer of the deck transformations commuting with the adjoined AF permutations. The formula classifies all subgroups between the canonical lift of the base AF alternating group and the AF alternating group of the covering. In particular, the lift is maximal exactly when the deck group has prime order, and cyclic coverings yield finitely generated groups whose intersections with the AF alternating group of the covering realize these subgroups. We identify fragmentations that produce the required selectors. For periodic fragmentations of the directed generator in the modified Fabrykowski--Gupta group, surjectivity of the activity subspace onto each pair of consecutive coordinates gives containment with absorption delay at most two. A five-periodic example also satisfies this condition, although its activity subspace has dual distance two. The original four-periodic fragmentation group has index four in its topological full group.
