Polynomial bounds for the stability of associated primes of monomial ideals

Abstract

Let $I$ be a nonzero proper monomial ideal in ${\rm k}[x_1,\ldots,x_r]$, and let $d$ be the maximal degree of a minimal monomial generator. We prove that the index of stability of the associated primes of its ordinary powers satisfies \[ {\rm astab}(I)\le\frac{(4e)^{r-1}}4\,d^{r-1}\qquad(r\ge3), \] while ${\rm astab}(I)=1$ for $r=2$. If $I$ has $s\ge2$ minimal generators, we also obtain \[ {\rm astab}(I)\le\min\{r,s\}(s-1)d^{\min\{r-1,s-2\}}. \] The first estimate answers Hoa's question on polynomial bounds. The proofs reduce stabilization to integer optimization for a matrix whose last row records the power of the ideal. We bound the degrees of its circuits and Graver basis elements and prove proximity estimates for optimal solutions in fixed fibers. A Steinitz rearrangement and a lattice-point count in the difference body of a simplex give the generator-independent bound. The matrix estimates hold for arbitrary indexed integral configurations in a simplex and real linear objective functions. The stability bounds hold over an arbitrary field, without normality or equigeneration assumptions.

On Hankel Determinantal Matroids

We initiate a study of the algebraic matroid associated to the ideal generated by the $(r+1)$-minors of a Hankel matrix of variables. We prove that this matroid is uniform, that is, a coordinate projection from the corresponding Hankel determinantal variety is generically finite if and only if it preserves at least $2r$ anti-diagonals. For such projections, we establish bounds on the degree. These results are of significance to the problem of Hankel low-rank matrix completion.

On the Rees, Dilworth and Matsumura number

In this paper we study three numerical invariants of local rings: the Rees number, the Dilworth number, and the Matsumura number. These quantities measure, respectively, the minimal lengths of certain cyclic modules, the maximal numbers of generators of ideals, and a parameter-based analogue in higher dimension. We construct a non-exact local complete-intersection ring over $\mathbb{F}_2$, thereby providing a negative answer to a question of Matsumura on the exactness of zero-dimensional complete intersections. We also present a family of artinian Gorenstein local rings over a field of characteristic zero that are exact, making progress on a question of Watanabe. Finally, answering a further question of Matsumura, we introduce and study the Matsumura number and the class of homologically exact rings, which extend the notion of exactness beyond the one-dimensional case.
