Saturation degree of powers of graded ideals

Abstract

Let $I$ be a non-nilpotent graded ideal of a standard graded algebra over a Noetherian commutative ring. We show that the saturation degree sdeg $I^n$ is asymptotically a constant function or a linear function whose slope is one of the generating degrees of $I$. Furthermore, we give sufficient (and necessary) conditions for a numerical functions to be the function sdeg $I^n$ of an ideal $I$ generated by forms of the same degree. Our results may provide a better understanding of the initial behavior of the regularity function reg $I^n$.

On Hankel Determinantal Matroids

We initiate a study of the algebraic matroid associated to the ideal generated by the $(r+1)$-minors of a Hankel matrix of variables. We prove that this matroid is uniform, that is, a coordinate projection from the corresponding Hankel determinantal variety is generically finite if and only if it preserves at least $2r$ anti-diagonals. For such projections, we establish bounds on the degree. These results are of significance to the problem of Hankel low-rank matrix completion.

On the Rees, Dilworth and Matsumura number

In this paper we study three numerical invariants of local rings: the Rees number, the Dilworth number, and the Matsumura number. These quantities measure, respectively, the minimal lengths of certain cyclic modules, the maximal numbers of generators of ideals, and a parameter-based analogue in higher dimension. We construct a non-exact local complete-intersection ring over $\mathbb{F}_2$, thereby providing a negative answer to a question of Matsumura on the exactness of zero-dimensional complete intersections. We also present a family of artinian Gorenstein local rings over a field of characteristic zero that are exact, making progress on a question of Watanabe. Finally, answering a further question of Matsumura, we introduce and study the Matsumura number and the class of homologically exact rings, which extend the notion of exactness beyond the one-dimensional case.
