Lax representations for the Navier--Stokes equations

Abstract

We construct a family of Lax representations for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in vorticity form. The key idea is to introduce an auxiliary vector field, termed the \emph{vorticity-diffusion potential}, which recasts the viscous Laplacian diffusion term as a Lie-bracket advection term. On solutions of the defining equation for this potential, the viscous vorticity equation takes the form of a pure Lie-transport equation along a modified divergence-free velocity field, while the defining constraint itself is encoded as the curl-free compatibility condition for an auxiliary scalar potential. We further show that the reduction of this three-dimensional system to two spatial dimensions yields a Lax representation for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes vorticity equation, which we generalize to a family parametrized by an arbitrary smooth function of one variable.

The gauge action on semi-discrete Lax representations, its invariants, and Lax-Miura type constructions

We introduce and study explicit invariants with respect to the action of (local) gauge transformations on the set of semi-discrete (differential-difference) matrix Lax representations (MLRs) for a given (1+1)-dimensional evolutionary differential-difference equation with any number of components. Using these invariants, we obtain the following general results: - Sufficient conditions for nonremovability of parameters in semi-discrete MLRs. (Nonremovability by means of gauge transformations.) - Necessary conditions for two semi-discrete MLRs to be gauge equivalent. Effective use of these results is demonstrated. We present the general theory and apply it to MLRs for equations of Volterra--Yamilov, Cherdantsev--Yamilov, Toda types and Miura-type modifications. Also, we present a comparison with results of S. Yu. Sakovich and M. Marvan on gauge invariants for (continuous) zero-curvature representations of partial differential equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate procedures for constructing Miura-type transformations (MTs) for discrete (partial difference) equations (on the two-dimensional integer lattice) by means of gauge simplifications of discrete matrix Lax pairs (DLPs) and reductions of auxiliary systems associated with DLPs. This allows us to construct new MTs for (non-evolutionary) 4-point and 6-point discrete equations from [D. Levi, R.I. Yamilov, J. Phys. A 2009], [S. Konstantinou-Rizos, A.V. Mikhailov, P. The Riemann theta function near soliton limit

It has been known that (the square of) Jacobi elliptic function can be expressed by an infinite sum of single solitons of $\sech^2$ shape. In this paper, we show that there exists a similar structure for higher genus cases. It turns out that this is just a consequence of the quasi-periodicity of the Riemann $θ$-function. More precisely, we show that the second derivative of $\log θ$ with the \emph{real} Riemann $θ$-function of genus $g$ near soliton limit can be well approximated by the \emph{sum} of \emph{real} and \emph{regular} $g$-soliton solutions of Hirota-type in $g$-dimensional real space $\R^g$. This leads to a tessellation of $\R^g$, whose tile is an oblique prism divided into $2^g$ sections by hyper-planes of dominant exponents in the theta function. We apply the results to study quasi-periodic solutions to the KdV and KP equations. We construct the quasi-periodic solutions using the Schottky group, which uniformizes the corresponding Riemann surfaces. We also discuss solitons on quasi-periodic background by pinching some of the homological cycles

Generating integrable systems from an autonomous ordinary differential equation

The freedom to realise special-function dynamics within integrable Kummer-type Hamiltonian systems remains underexplored. We investigate this freedom through examples constructed from prescribed autonomous scalar equations, using the established reduction and mode-reconstruction framework. A local holomorphic equation $ρ^\prime = f(ρ)$ determines a family of canonical Hamiltonians on a selected energy level, subject to regularity and compatible branch choices. We introduce the category of log-augmented polynomial systems, whose polynomial mode equations retain logarithmic terms in their scalar reductions, and illustrate it with examples including the Lotka-Volterra model and a parity-time-symmetric dimer. For rational generating equations, we prove a correspondence with extended Lambert-W-type inverse laws and establish elementary evaluation of rational reconstruction quadratures, giving local solvability results for the associated coupled systems. Further constructions use inverse incomplete beta and inverse spherical Bessel functions and the modular $λ$ function. The modular example has explicit theta-constant mode solutions and a direct map to the Darboux-Halphen system.
