Gaussian Fluctuations of the Gradient of the Fréchet Function and Nonstandard Asymptotics of Sample Fréchet Means

Abstract

We establish a central limit theorem for the gradient of the population Fréchet function in local Euclidean coordinates on a metric space. Assuming a unique population mean, a consistent measurable sequence of sample means, semiconcavity and moment bounds for the squared distance functions, and local $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the population Fréchet function, we prove an asymptotic linear representation for the gradient of the population Fréchet function evaluated at the sample mean. The leading term is the negative empirical average of the gradients of the squared distance functions at the population mean; these gradients exist almost surely under our assumptions. On connected complete Riemannian manifolds, uniqueness of the population mean, existence of a $(2+η)$-moment, and local $C^{1,α}$ regularity suffice, and the leading term is expressed through the logarithm map. To control the empirical process uniformly over a neighborhood where squared distance functions may be nonsmooth, we use one-sided partial derivatives of the squared distance functions. The key estimate is a polynomial bound on the $L^2$ bracketing numbers of the resulting function classes. We also give a sufficient condition for the regularity of the population Fréchet function through probability bounds for neighborhoods of cut loci. We then show how the local behavior of the population Fréchet function transforms these Gaussian fluctuations into limit distributions for suitably rescaled sample Fréchet means, allowing for anisotropic scaling and non-Gaussian limits. Polynomial, logarithmic, and oscillatory examples illustrate the applicability and limitations of this approach.

Dimension formula for harmonic measures in invariant random graphs on Gromov hyperbolic spaces

For random walks in various group-invariant random graphs on Gromov hyperbolic spaces, we show that the associated harmonic measures are exact dimensional and their Hausdorff dimensions are equal to the entropy over the speed, Our method is inspired by cluster relations introduced by Gaboriau and applies to percolation clusters on hyperbolic groups and Poisson--Voronoi tessellations on rank one Riemannian symmetric spaces.

Well-posedness of kinetic McKean-Vlasov equations

We consider the McKean-Vlasov equation $dX_t = b(t, X_t, [X_t])dt + σ(t, X_t, [X_t])dW_t$ where $[X_t]$ is the law of $X_t$. We specifically consider the kinetic case, where the equation is degenerate because the dimension of the Brownian motion $W$ is strictly smaller than that of the solution $X$, as commonly required in classical models of collisional kinetic theory. Assuming Hölder continuous coefficients and a weak Hörmander condition, we prove the well-posedness of the equation. This result advances the existing literature by filling a crucial gap: it addresses the previously unexplored case where the diffusion coefficient $σ$ depends on the law $[X_t]$. Notably, our proof employs a simplified and direct argument eliminating the need for PDEs involving derivatives with respect to the measure argument. A critical ingredient is the sub-Riemannian metric structure induced by the corresponding Fokker-Planck operator.

Ranges of Extremal Processes and Heavy-Tailed Random Walks in Spaces of Growing Dimension

We consider extremal processes and random walks generated by heavy-tailed random vectors taking values in ${\mathbb R}^d$ endowed with the $\ell_p$ metric. We establish limit theorems for the ranges of associated paths in the triangular array setting when both the number of steps $n$ and the dimension $d$ grow to infinity. It is shown that it is possible to transform the paths by suitable linear isometric embeddings of $\ell_p$ such that the transformed paths converge in distribution and to identify the limit in terms of a Poisson cluster process. These results also imply the convergence in distribution of the paths viewed as finite metric spaces in the space of metric spaces equipped with the Gromov--Hausdorff metric. Furthermore, we prove convergence in distribution of the transformed paths in the space of counting measures on the line equipped with a Hausdorff metric induced by a suitable $\ell_p$-type distance between counting measures.
