Impact of Torque Ripple Induced Angular Oscillations on Maxwell Pressure Harmonics in Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines

Abstract

Torque ripple in electrical machines is a wellknown source of noise and vibration. While numerous studies focus on control strategies to mitigate this ripple, the feedback mechanism by which the resulting mechanical oscillations influence the electromagnetic forces remains less explored. This paper presents a detailed investigation into the impact of torque ripple on the rotor angular dynamics and the subsequent generation of new harmonics in the Maxwell pressure distribution. We first develop an analytical model for a rigid rotor subjected to a single torque harmonic, revealing the inherently non-linear nature of the angular response. This analysis demonstrates the creation of new harmonics in the rotor motion and a slight reduction in the mean rotational speed. The study is then extended to a flexible rotor model incorporating torsional modes, solved using the Finite Element Method. Finally, we introduce a strongly coupled magneto-mechanical model, based on the subdomain method, to quantify how these rotor oscillations modulate the air-gap magnetic field. The results show a new modulated spatio-temporal harmonic distribution in the Maxwell pressure spectrum, which is not predicted by conventional uncoupled models. These findings are crucial for high-fidelity Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) analysis, as these additional pressure waves can excite stator structural modes.

5D Runge-Lenz Vector from Symplectic Reduction of 8D Harmonic Oscillator

We derive the Runge-Lenz vector of the five-dimensional Kepler problem from the eight-dimensional harmonic oscillator through symplectic reduction. By rewriting the moment maps of the harmonic oscillator in terms of five-dimensional gamma matrices and the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ generators associated with the symplectic reduction, we identify the moment map expected to yield the Runge-Lenz vector. We then perform the reduction with respect to the SU(2) symmetry, derive the five-dimensional Kepler Hamiltonian, and show explicitly that the identified moment map reduces to the Runge-Lenz vector.

Scalar-Longitudinal Modes of Extended Electrodynamics in Perfectly Conducting Waveguides and Divergence Cleaning Interpretation

Extended electrodynamics keeps the scalar combination $C=\nabla\cdot\mathbf{A}+μ_0\varepsilon_0\partialΦ/\partial t$ as a dynamical field rather than imposing the Lorenz gauge condition, and this scalar adds a scalar-longitudinal (SL) family to the TE, TM and TEM modes. With $C=0$ on the wall of a closed perfectly conducting waveguide, the classical modes are unchanged. The SL modes have $\mathbf{B}=0$ and an electric field along $\nabla C$, and their cutoffs are the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the cross-section, the same as the TM cutoffs, with no coaxial TEM counterpart. Charge-conserving sources with zero scalar data do not excite them. Matching at a conductor described by its constitutive laws gives $\partial C/\partial n=0$ instead and couples the scalar-bearing modes to the Maxwell field. The results belong to the $C=0$ problem, the condition that separates the sectors and the one divergence cleaning uses, with benchmarks for the rectangular, circular cylinder, coaxial and L-shaped guides.

Conservation of Momentum and Energy in the Lorenz-Abraham-Dirac Equation of Motion

After a brief review of the modified (by transition forces) causal Lorentz-Abraham (LA) classical equation of motion for an extended charged sphere and its limit to the mass-renormalized modified causal Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac (LAD) equation of motion as the radius of the charged sphere approaches zero, a concise derivation is given for the conditions on the velocity and external force required for these modified equations of motion to satisfy conservation of momentum and energy. The effects of mass renomalization on the radiated momentum-energy is clarified. The solutions to the unmodified LAD equation of motion, the causal modified LA and LAD equations of motion, and the Landau-Lifshitz approximate solution to the unmodified LAD equation of motion are obtained for a charge traveling through a parallel-plate capacitor.
