Consistent Modeling of SEI Growth via Electron Diffusion Validated Across Diverse Cell Specifications and Operating Conditions in LFP/Graphite Cells

Abstract

Understanding and predicting degradation in lithium-ion batteries is critical for their widespread deployment. The continuous growth of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) remains a dominant aging pathway, yet accurately modeling its kinetics across diverse cell specifications and operating conditions remains a significant challenge. Here, we present and validate a physically grounded SEI growth model mediated by the electron diffusion mechanism. This framework intrinsically captures the state of charge (SOC) dependence of degradation through the impact of the anode potential on the electron concentration, which governs the rate of SEI growth. The presented model explicitly accounts for variations in electrolyte salt, anode material, temperature, and cycling rate. Validation against experimental aging data for LFP/graphite cells demonstrates high predictive accuracy across a broad range of cell specifications and cycling conditions, including confined SOC windows, electrolyte salts (LiFSI, LiPF6), artificial graphites (AGC, AGD), temperatures (40-70°C), and C-rates (C/20-1C). Remarkably, a single, consistent set of parameters is applied to simulate the capacity fade for all experiments without recalibration. While quantitative overestimations occur during high-SOC storage periods, the framework consistently captures the observed degradation trends. Our findings underscore that lower SOC operation mitigates degradation, establishing a physics-based model for predicting long-term lithium-ion battery aging.

Global approximations to the error function of real argument for vectorized computation

The error function of real argument can be approximated to a given uniform relative accuracy by a single closed-form expression for the whole variable range either in terms of addition, multiplication, division, and square root operations only, or also using the exponential function. Approximations to the complementary error function have also been found, including those where either only additions, multiplications, and one division, or also the exponential, are used to reach either a uniform absolute, or a uniform relative, accuracy. The coefficients have been tabulated for up to 128-bit precision. Tests of a computer code implementation using the standard single- and double-precision floating-point arithmetic show good performance and vectorizability.

Accelerating Periodic Coupled Cluster and Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction Theories With Frozen Natural Orbitals

We present a unified frozen natural orbital (FNO) framework for periodic Gaussian-orbital post-Hartree-Fock calculations with explicit k-point sampling. The approach includes conventional ground-state FNOs together with state-specific (SS-FNO) and state-averaged (SA-FNO) variants constructed from perturbative one-particle density matrices. We implement these approximations for periodic Moller-Plesset perturbation theory, algebraic diagrammatic construction, and equation-of-motion coupled cluster methods in the PySCF software package and benchmark them for correlation energies, equations of state, fundamental band gaps, and quasiparticle band structures of semiconductors and insulators. FNO truncation reproduces canonical results with small errors while substantially reducing computational cost. SS-FNO enables accurate large-basis band-gap calculations, including quadruple-zeta results, whereas SA-FNO efficiently compresses the virtual space for multi-state band-structure calculations. Combined with basis-set and thermodynamic-limit extrapolations, the framework provides a practical route to high-accuracy correlated calculations in periodic systems.

Coherent dynamics and ultrafast evolution of optical nonlinearity of self-hybridized exciton-polaritons in WSe2

Exciton-polaritons (EPs) are valuable for investigating macroscopic quantum coherent phenomena. However, overcoming the rapid decoherence of EPs under ambient conditions is challenging, even using delicately fabricated optical cavities. Here, we show pronounced coherent dynamics in thin flakes of WSe2 supporting self-hybridized EPs. Ultrafast two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) resolves two types of quantum beating: Rabi oscillation with a period of ~ 24 fs and a slower, ~ 50 fs period oscillation, revealing coherent coupling not only between excitons and cavity, but also between polaritons and dark states. Rapid evolution of 2DES line shape indicates a change of dominant optical nonlinearities from Rabi contraction of polaritons to many-body interactions of excitons in the first 100 fs, marking the transition from coherent to incoherent polariton excitations. The results are rationalized by a three-coupled oscillator model considering the inhomogeneous cavity field distribution. We also demonstrate coherent quantum beating between A exciton and its excited Rydberg state A* under ambient conditions. Our results shed light on the coherent control in readily accessible semiconductor thin flakes.
