Probing Red Giant Interiors with g-Dominated Mixed Modes II: The Cases of KIC 6117517, KIC 9475697, KIC 10123207 and KIC 10200377

Abstract

Building on Paper~I, which constrained core overshooting to $f_{\rm ov} < 0.01$ for $M < 1.4\,M_{\odot}$ and found $α_{\rm MLT} \simeq 2.0$ for metal-rich red giants, we extend this analysis to four lower-mass \textit{Kepler} red giants spanning a broad metallicity range: KIC~6117517, KIC~9475697, KIC~10123207, and KIC~10200377. Two complementary model grids are constructed: Grid~A fixes $α_{\rm MLT} = 2.0$ while varying metallicity; Grid~B adopts spectroscopic metallicities with $α_{\rm MLT}$ as a free parameter. Grid~A successfully reproduces both asteroseismic and spectroscopic constraints for the metal-rich targets (KIC~6117517 and KIC~9475697), confirming $α_{\rm MLT} = 2.0$ for metal-rich red giants. For the metal-poor targets (KIC~10123207 and KIC~10200377), Grid~B yields larger mixing-length parameters of $α_{\rm MLT} \approx 2.16$--$2.18$. Although only four stars are analyzed with unequal sensitivity to $α_{\rm MLT}$, these results suggest a tentative increase in convective efficiency toward lower metallicity, consistent with 3D hydrodynamical simulations but opposite to some 1D empirical calibrations. The best-fitting overshooting parameters ($f_{\rm ov} = 0.006$--$0.007$) independently support the Paper~I constraint and are consistent with a mass-dependent overshooting relation. The parameter uncertainties reach $0.6$--$2.5\%$ in mass, $0.2$--$0.9\%$ in radius, $2$--$13\%$ in age, and below $0.6\%$ in helium-core mass and below $0.2\%$ in helium-core radius. Surface-effect corrections are negligible for g-dominated mixed modes, validating $χ^2_{l=1g}$ as a robust fitting metric. For KIC~9475697, the core rotation rate is determined to be $Ω_{\rm core} = 0.6945 \pm 0.0190\,μ$Hz from model-based trapping parameters.

Stellar Population Spectra Incorporating Detailed Binary Evolution using POSYDON

The accuracy of stellar population properties inferred through spectral energy distribution fitting hinges on the reliability of the underlying spectral models. Binary interactions are fundamental for massive star evolution, and ignoring their spectral contribution can lead to incorrect results. We use the POSYDON binary population synthesis code to generate spectral models of stellar populations that include binaries at solar metallicity. Our framework incorporates a collection of spectral libraries that is designed to address key outcomes of binary stellar evolution like Wolf-Rayet stars, stripped helium stars, and a treatment for stellar mergers. Our models confirm previous results showing that the inclusion of binary interactions has a significant effect on the UV and ionizing regime of the integrated spectrum. In particular we find that Wolf-Rayet stars and other massive stars dominate the production of ionizing radiation at earlier times, but after $\simeq$16 Myr stripped stars produced through mass transfer begin to dominate. Furthermore, we show that the production of ionizing He II photons is especially sensitive to the underlying population of stripped stars. While our results currently focus on high-mass stars ($\ge4~M_{\odot}$) at Solar metallicity, they provide the framework for binary spectral synthesis across a range of metallicities and masses and lay the foundation for calculations of the emergent emission-line spectra in the UV, optical, and IR regimes. We make the spectral models from this work publicly available for use in a format that can be integrated into fitting codes.

Detection and Statistics of large-scale Sector Boundary Crossings in the Solar Wind: The SBCross Catalog

Heliospheric sector boundary crossings (SBCs), composed of the Heliospheric Current Sheet (HCS), Heliospheric Plasma Sheet (HPS), and surrounding plasma halo, represent fundamental structures in the solar wind that influence interplanetary dynamics and space weather. We present the \textsc{SBCross} catalog, an automated, publicly available database containing 1,076 SBC events derived from in-situ observations spanning more than 30 years (1995--2026), covering Solar Cycles 23 and 24 alongside the rising and maximum phases of Solar Cycle 25. By combining interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and 255~eV suprathermal electron pitch angle distributions (PAD) data, our algorithm reliably captures large-scale polarity transitions, with $76\%$ of detected SBCs exhibiting clear HPS signatures ($β> 1$, $n_{\mathrm{peak}} > 10\mathrm{\,cm^{-3}}$). Across the catalog, we find an average occurrence rate of $\approx 2.6$ events per Carrington rotation, a median event duration of $\approx 9.0$\,hours, and a median physical thickness of $\approx 7.4 \times 10^6$\,km. Furthermore, approximately $\approx 15\%$ of detected SBCs interact with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on average, with this proportion rising up to $33\%$ during solar maximum. These CME-associated events exhibit systematically longer durations (median of $10.0$\,hours), $54\%$ larger physical thicknesses, and higher average solar wind velocities. Notably, all high-velocity SBC events ($> 600\mathrm{\,km\,s^{-1}}$) are exclusively driven by CME interactions, demonstrating local plasma pile-up and structural entanglement resulting from fast CMEs overtaking the ambient slow background. The \textsc{SBCross} catalog serves as an updated successor to the classic SBC list by L. Svalgaard, delivering a standardized, open-access resource for the heliophysics community to systematically investigate sector boundary transitions.

A comprehensive reanalysis of HD 99458. Not a magnetic Ap star but an oscillating Algol with ongoing mass transfer

Context. Since 2019, HD 99458 has been known as a unique example of a $δ$ Sct variable with chemical peculiarities of Ap type in an eclipsing binary. Aims. We aim to review the peculiar status of the star with new observational materials. Methods. The current study is the result of meticulous analysis of space-based photometry from Kepler K2 and TESS, multi-site spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations, as well as speckle-interferometric data. Asteroseismic modelling of stellar pulsation is an essential part of the research. Results. We find HD 99458 to be an eclipsing Algol-type system with active mass transfer from the cool companion filling its Roche lobe to the pulsating primary. We identified signatures of a disc and accretion with varying rates in spectra and light curves. The system's orbital period increases with the rate $\dot{P}_\mathrm{orb}$ of 5.045 s yr$^{-1}$, indicating potential multiplicity. We failed to detect traces of the primary's magnetic field or excessive abundances, both of which are necessary to classify HD 99458 as an Ap star. We have constrained the fundamental parameters of the pulsating primary and analysed its pulsation using asteroseismology. In space-based photometry, we identified pulsation modes with angular degree $\ell\leq3$. Two-dimensional Fourier analysis of spectroscopic time series reveals pulsations in the form of standing waves with the azimuthal orders $|m|=5\pm1$. Combined analysis of photometry and spectroscopy confirms the status of HD 99458 as a triaxial gravitationally distorted pulsator. Conclusions. Our comprehensive study affirms the new classification for HD 99458.
