Correlation-induced suppression of Granger causality and Gaussian transfer entropy

Abstract

In complex dynamical systems, Granger causality and transfer entropy are widely used to infer directional interactions, but they quantify a source's unique predictive contribution after conditioning and can therefore be substantially attenuated by correlation with the retained variables. Here, using our previously developed Linear Operator Causality Analysis (LOCA) framework, which measures causal response from the system propagator, we derive a relationship between predictive and operator-based causality. For a two-dimensional linear system, the fractional suppression of Granger causality equals the squared correlation between source and receiver. We generalize this result to high-dimensional systems using the source covariance remaining after conditioning and show that additional conditioning can only increase the suppression. The same covariance ordering yields a corresponding upper bound for Gaussian transfer entropy. A linearized Burgers advection chain exhibits 36.6% suppression at the convective travel-time peak, and exact nonlinear acoustic Burgers solutions show that the fitted-surrogate penalty is governed by correlation structure rather than nonlinearity and remains robust to sensor noise after operator debiasing. Applied to resting-state fMRI from the Human Connectome Project (80 brain regions, 8 functional networks, 10 subjects), the single-lag Granger causality measure falls 39.4% below the operator response when conditioning only on the receiver and 73.0% when conditioning on the receiver and all other retained variables. The framework provides a quantitative bridge between predictive and operator-based causal measures in high-dimensional dynamical systems.

$Φ^4_3$ measures on compact Riemannian $3$-manifolds

We construct the $Φ^4_3$ measure on an arbitrary 3-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold without boundary as an invariant probability measure of a singular stochastic partial differential equation. Proving the nontriviality and the covariance under Riemannian isometries of that measure gives a non-perturbative, non-topological interacting Euclidean quantum field measure on curved spaces in dimension 3. To control analytically several Feynman diagrams appearing in the construction of a number of random fields, we introduce a novel approach of renormalisation using microlocal and harmonic analysis. This allows to obtain a renormalized equation which involves some universal constants independent of the manifold. In a companion paper \cite{BDFTCompanion}, we develop all the tools from paradifferential and microlocal analysis that we use to build in our manifold setting a number of analytic and probabilistic objects.

Perfect t-Embeddings of Uniformly Weighted Generalized Tower Graphs

In this paper, we study sequences of perfect t-embeddings of a uniformly weighted family of graphs we call generalized tower graphs. We show that the embeddings of these graphs satisfy certain technical assumptions, in particular, the rigidity assumption of Berggren-Nicoletti-Russkikh. As a result, we confirm the convergence of the gradients of the height function fluctuations of these graphs to those of the Gaussian free field.

The para--Krawtchouk oscillator and its continuum limit

The para-Krawtchouk polynomials define, through their recurrence relation, a finite oscillator model that exhibits fractional revival. We determine the continuum limit of this Hamiltonian, both from its recurrence relation and directly on the polynomials. The limit is the singular (isotonic) oscillator $-\partial_η^2+η^2+\tfrac{γ^2-1}{4η^2}$. The deformation parameter $γ$ survives as a central impurity of the couplings, which decays as the inverse square of the distance. This is the marginal rate, which the continuum scaling turns into a finite $\sfrac{1}{η^2}$ term. Using the decomposition of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials into two Hahn families, we prove the confluence, for every degree, of the eigenvectors on the two sub-lattices to generalized Hermite functions. The bispectral pair of the discrete model, which generates the Hahn algebra, becomes in the limit a pair of generators of $\su$, the dynamical algebra of the singular oscillator.
