Three subpopulations of binary black holes in mass, spin magnitudes and tilts following GWTC-5

Abstract

The mass and spin distributions of merging binary black holes offer clues to their formation pathways, which remain uncertain. In this work, we model the population of binary black holes using generic subpopulations with distinct mass-ratio, spin-magnitude, and spin-tilt distributions, whose relative contributions vary with primary mass. Using the 259 binary black holes in the fifth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalog (GWTC-5), we resolve three subpopulations with low, medium, and high spins. The low-spin population dominates for primary masses near $35 M_\odot$, contributes roughly half of the binaries for primary masses of $10 M_\odot$, and favors nearly equal mass ratios overall; its spins are consistent with both black holes having negligible spin, with a log Bayes factor of $\log_{10}B =6.1^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ in favor of vanishing spins. The medium-spin population accounts for the other half of the population around primary masses of $10 M_\odot$ and favors spin magnitudes $χ_i \approx 0.2$ for both components, preferentially aligned orientations, and comparable mass ratios. The high-spin population dominates above primary masses of $60 M_\odot$ and also contributes at lower masses $\sim 20 M_\odot$; it favors a rapidly spinning primary ($χ_1 \approx 0.7$), a broad range of secondary spins, widely distributed spin orientations, and a broad mass-ratio distribution. Allowing for a fourth subpopulation yields no distinct additional mass-ratio or spin distribution, as it becomes degenerate with existing features. To resolve highly concentrated features in spin, we control the variance of standard Monte Carlo likelihood estimators using truncated Gaussian mixture models. Taken together, our results add to a growing body of evidence for substructure in the population of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA black holes, providing further clues to uncover their formation histories.

Testing the Correlations between X-ray Spectral Properties and Polarization for High Synchrotron Peaked Blazars

IXPE has enabled the X-ray polarizations of many blazars to be measured. We present the first population study for high synchrotron peaked blazars observed with IXPE using a uniform X-ray data analysis. We do not find any statistically significant correlations between the spectral properties of the blazars and their X-ray polarimetric properties. The lack of significant correlations may imply that there is little connection between the energy distribution of the X-ray emitting electrons and the uniformity of the magnetic field in the X-ray emitting regions of these blazars. These results will inform future theoretical work and potentially help narrow down the acceleration process of the synchrotron electrons.

Quantitative modelling of type Ia supernovae spectral time series II: Exploring the diversity of thermonuclear explosion scenarios

Observations of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have led to suggestions of multiple progenitor and explosion scenarios. Distinguishing between scenarios and tying specific SNe Ia to individual scenarios however has so far been challenging. Constraints on the explosion physics are often achieved through empirical modelling of SNe Ia spectra and qualitative assessments of the level of agreement. While this approach has provided useful insights, it cannot be scaled up to large numbers of SNe Ia in a robust and systematic way. As a machine learning based framework for automated and quantitative fitting of SNe Ia, riddler is designed to overcome these limitations. Neural networks are used as radiative transfer emulators and, in conjunction with nested sampling, emulated spectra are fit to observations of SNe Ia to determine the best-fitting input parameters and explosion scenario. In this work, we present recent improvements to riddler, including a significantly expanded training dataset covering pure deflagrations, delayed detonations, double detonations, gravitationally confined detonations, and violent mergers. We show that despite the increased complexity and variety of our training data, riddler is able to accurately recover the input parameters and explosion scenario of spectra unseen during training. Using riddler, we fit observations of three SNe Ia covering different sub-classes: SN 2011fe, SN 2005hk, and SN 2018byg. We detail a number of limitations and assumptions that should be considered when applying similar approaches. Nevertheless, the benefits of this approach and riddler will result in automated fitting playing an increasingly important role in the coming years.

Astrophysical Constraints on Hadron--Quark Crossover in Hybrid Neutron Stars

We investigate astrophysical constraints on hybrid neutron-star equations of state constructed by combining an extended linear sigma model description of quark matter with several representative hadronic equations of state through a smooth hadron--quark crossover. Four different hadronic models are examined in order to explore the model dependence of the resulting hybrid equations of state. After imposing stability, causality, perturbative QCD matching, tidal deformability, and maximum-mass constraints, only the eLSM+GMSR(BSK16) construction remains fully consistent with current astrophysical observations. The surviving parameterizations are further constrained using Bayesian inference based on NICER mass--radius measurements and the GW170817 gravitational-wave event. The posterior distributions favor a broad hadron--quark crossover occurring at relatively high baryon densities, while the formation of extended pure quark cores is strongly disfavored. Instead, the current observations favor neutron stars containing an extended mixed hadron--quark transition region. We also investigate the implications of the inferred maximum-mass distribution for the secondary object of GW190814 and find that, within the present model and adopted observational constraints, its interpretation as a neutron star is unlikely.
