Information geometry of continuum limits in lattice field theory: The Gross-Neveu model with Wilson fermions

Abstract

When the Boltzmann weight is nonnegative, the actions of a lattice field theory define a family of probability distributions that forms a statistical manifold, and its Fisher metric gives the number of measurements needed to distinguish two nearby actions. In the large-$N$ limit of the two-dimensional lattice Gross-Neveu model with Wilson fermions, we study the continuum limit, in which the lattice spacing $a$ is taken to zero with the mass gap $Λ$ fixed, through the Fisher metric of the distribution of the auxiliary field $σ$. The renormalization condition fixes an expectation coordinate, and dimensional transmutation becomes an exponential relation between it and a natural coordinate. The main result is that the $a\to0$ limits differ between the Fisher metric of the long-distance modes, whose momenta are fixed in physical units, and the Fisher metric of the full $P(σ)$. In the former, the lengths of the infinitely many irrelevant directions that change the kinetic term shrink, relative to the mass-term direction, to order $aΛ\log(1/(aΛ))$ or smaller, and when several modes are combined, only the two directions $(Λ,m)$ of the continuum theory remain. In the latter, the kinetic-term directions shrink at the same rate as the mass-term direction, and the difference in the regularization remains in correlations at distances of the order of the lattice spacing. An exception is the deformation that only adds a contact term to the propagator: as $a\to0$ its length goes to zero in both metrics, and it becomes indistinguishable from a change of the coupling $1/g^2$ (a lattice version of Kutasov's result). The curvature of the coupling plane at fixed kinetic term diverges as $(1/2)\log^2(1/(aΛ))$, not as the correlation volume often assumed in thermodynamic geometry, and the critical point is infinitely far in Fisher distance from any point at finite $a$.

QCD on the 16-cell honeycomb

We formulate QCD discretized on the four dimensional 16-cell honeycomb. The advantage is a higher degree of rotational symmetry as compared to a traditional cubic lattice leading to much smaller cut-off effects. We demonstrate in quenched QCD, through both gluonic and fermionic observables, that the scaling properties are indeed superior to the cubic lattice and much larger lattice spacings are sufficient for controlled continuum extrapolations. Chiral and topological properties also show remarkable improvement.

A different kind of continuum limit for the three-dimensional U(1) gauge theory

In three-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory color confinement can be understood analytically through the dynamics of magnetic monopoles. However, its continuum limit is pathological, since the ratio of the glueball masses to the square root of the string tension vanishes as the continuum limit is approached. We investigate a simple extension of the Wilson action in which the total number of lattice monopoles is coupled to an additional parameter $μ$. By tuning $β$ and $μ$ simultaneously, we identify a line of constant physics along which the ratio of the lightest glueball mass to the square root of the string tension remains constant. We further show that the same scaling is satisfied, within numerical uncertainties, by the other low-lying glueball masses considered in this work. Along this trajectory, the string tension in lattice units decreases with increasing $β$, thus suggesting that the modified lattice action may provide a regularization of three-dimensional compact U(1) gauge theory with a physically well-behaved continuum limit.

Large-$N$ $π^+π^+$ scattering from twisted Eguchi--Kawai reduction

We present the first computation of the $π^+π^+$ scattering length in large-$N$ QCD in the 't Hooft limit, $N_{\scriptscriptstyle{\rm f}}/N\to 0$, using the twisted Eguchi--Kawai formulation of the lattice theory. We employ values of $N$ up to 1156 and consider several quark masses and lattice spacings to achieve controlled large-$N$, continuum, and chiral limits. The chiral behavior of the scattering length is compared with next-to-leading-order Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions. Our result for the low-energy coupling describing the sub-leading quark-mass dependence is consistent with existing S-matrix bootstrap bounds. Combining TEK results with previous lattice QCD data obtained using standard methods for $3\le N\le 6$, we are also able to extract sub-leading $\mathcal{O}(1/N)$ corrections to the large-$N$ scattering length.
