$Λ$-Gravity from Entropy

Abstract

The Gravity from Entropy (GfE) theory treats the metric of spacetime as quantum operators and proposes the GfE action for gravity. The GfE Lagrangian is given by the Geometric Quantum Relative Entropy (GQRE) between the true metric and the metric induced by the matter fields and curvature. The theory leads to modified gravity equations and predicts the emergence of a dynamical cosmological constant $Λ_{\mathcal{G}}$. In the low energy, small curvature limit the GfE gravity equations reduce to Einstein equations with vanishing cosmological constant, i.e. in the weak field linear approximation $Λ_{\mathcal{G}}$ vanishes. In this work, we propose a generalisation of the GfE theory, called $Λ$-Gravity from Entropy ($Λ$GfE). Following a thermodynamic approach, we introduce a Lagrange multiplier $Λ$ to define the local volume of the theory. By enforcing local Weyl stationarity of the $Λ$GfE action modulo the volume constraint of the theory, we derive the equation for $Λ$. The $Λ$GfE equations of motion include two dark energy contributions: the emergent and dynamical contribution given by $Λ_{\mathcal{G}}$ plus a constant contribution given by $Λ$ where $Λ$ can be identified with the cosmological constant in the low energy small curvature limit. While this theory cannot predict the exact value of $Λ$, here it is shown that the vacuum contributions to the dressed stress-energy tensor cancel from the trace-free equations of motion of the $Λ$GfE theory. Within the GfE framework, the $Λ$GfE also offers a novel interpretation of the dark energy terms, with potentially testable consequences for cosmological observations.

Fluctuations in Aharonov-Bohm Electrodynamics

We consider the application of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT) to the electrodynamics of Aharonov-Bohm (ABE), which differs from Maxwell's in that it allows for local non-conservation of charge. For the case of a system of non-conserved charges at thermal equilibrium we obtain the same spectral distribution of energy of the electromagnetic field as in Maxwell electrodynamics. However, the electric field contribution to that energy doubles that in Maxwell case, while the magnetic contribution is the same as in Maxwell theory, the electric excess energy is compensated by a negative contribution arising form the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) scalar field. For a conductor with local non-conservation of charge described by the $γ$ model, we derive the spectrum of current correlation at first order in $γ$, which results in a violet noise contribution added to the classical Johnson-Nyquist white noise result for the voltage fluctuations in a conductor.

Tsallis Holographic Dark Energy with varying Gravitational Constant vs $Λ$CDM : A Comparative Outlook

We investigate the cosmological evolution of a flat Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe filled with Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) under the assumption that the gravitational constant $G$ varies with time according to the power-law parametrisation $d\ln G / d\ln a = α_G = \mathrm{const}$. In this framework, the holographic dark energy density is given by $ρ_{\mathrm{DE}} \propto L^{2γ- 4}$, where $L$ is the future event horizon and $γ$ is the Tsallis non-additivity parameter. We study both the past and future evolution of the Universe for various values of the model parameters $C$, $γ$, and $α_G$. The viability of the model is tested against a combination of observational data, including the Pantheon+ Type Ia supernova sample, direct Hubble parameter measurements $H(z)$, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and Bayesian analysis tools such as the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), the Bayes factor, and the suspiciousness metric, we perform a rigorous statistical comparison with the standard $Λ$CDM model. Our results show that models with a varying gravitational constant are preferred over $Λ$CDM. The best fit to the combined data is obtained for the THDE model with $C < 1$. Furthermore, we analyse the internal consistency of the data sets using the Index of Inconsistency, the $Q_{\mathrm{DMAP}}$ statistic, and Bayesian suspiciousness. We find that the THDE model with varying $G$ and $C < 1$ partially alleviates the tensions between different probes, reducing the significance from $\sim 7.4σ$ to $\sim 5.3σ$.

Is MOND an effect of cosmic frame-dragging à la Mach?

The physical origin of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), which predicts galaxy rotation curves via a single empirical acceleration constant $a_0$ without the need for dark matter, remains unknown. I propose a modified-inertia origin for both MOND's interpolating function and $a_0$ within a framework closely related to Gravitoelectromagnetism, the linearized limit of General Relativity. Following Sciama's model unifying gravity and inertia, which implements Mach's principle and the relativity of acceleration through gravitoelectric induction, I consider an idealized homogeneous universe undergoing constant Hubble expansion. I identify $a_0 \sim H_0^2R_u \sim c^2/R_u$ with the relative recession acceleration of cosmic matter near the horizon, which dominates the cosmological contribution. I show that this scale enters local inertial dynamics only when the relative acceleration of the universe becomes anisotropic and the Rindler horizon is comparable to or larger than the cosmic Hubble horizon, at accelerations of order $a_0$ and below. By the simplest Ansatz for the observer's acceleration-dependent causal volume, accounting for the interplay between the cosmic and Rindler horizons, I derive MOND's simple interpolating function as a modified inertia law without the need to insert it by hand or make any further ad hoc adjustments. Physically, the region brought into causal connection ahead of the accelerating observer by the deformation of the cosmic horizon contributes less inertial drag than is lost from the region removed behind him by the Rindler horizon. This proof of concept motivates the possibility that MOND arises from large-scale linear inertial frame-dragging induced by the expanding universe within General Relativity.
